RYA Examiner fails to return results of tests

Chaps,

I spent the first few months of the year doing my Yachtmaster Theory however, after completing the course I've been waiting for the past three weeks to find out if I've passed or not.

I've contacted the school who have forwarded my mail but still no answer. I thought it may be just me however, the rest of the course members have received no results.

I'm going to give them another week for the examiner to sort himself out and then I'm going to start complaining to the RYA.

Do the RYA take this sort of thing seriously?

Yes, I'm sure the RYA will take this seriously.

As well as writing to the examiner, have you also written to the school? They should interested in trying to correct the problem before it is brought to the RYA's attention and, I'd have thought, should be given the chance to help.

Here's the rub

Until recently, you were handed your certificate on the last night of the course. Then some pea-brained instructor left a load of blank certs which were nicked from his handbag. As a result, the RYA now require instructor to send the pass/fail to them and they in turn post the cert or dear john. Takes about 5 weeks I'm told coz they have a lot of other fees to collect.

Look on the bright side. For the first time, RYA are prob recording shore-based results. Probably

But they should know their recommendation and have communicated this to you by now

Yep, I'm writing to the school although I can honestly say the other courses I've been on at the school have been quite good.

Ask the RYA for help if you don't get a response from the school in a reasonable time. The RYA WILL take an interest and have loads of clout with the school/examiner/instructor. I hope its just an admin glitch.

I try to complete practical exam reports within a few days of completing an exam. The forms then get posted to the RYA who usually turn them round within a few days/couple of weeks. I still get candidates phoning up within a week of the exam asking where their ticket is!

If you are intending to take the practical exam dont worry as you dont need the theory ticket to enrol for the practical .

I agree its very poor though after all the effort(and expense)you have gone to the least they can do is give you your results promptly.

i had a go at them abt how umpteen hundreds of thousands have a piece of rya paper but the rya haven't a clue who they are and, more to the point, whether they ever joined ... struck me as being bonkers if they're serious abt being "voice of yachting"

Confused Shore Based Tutor

1. RYA Examiners conduct Yachtmaster Examinations at sea. Quite rightly, some can get a bit tetchy if you call somebody else an examiner.
2. Shore based courses are taught by qualified instructors, normally referred to as tutors.
3. I finished tutoring a Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shore Based Theory Course and a Day Skipper Shore Based Theory Course at my local AEC in March and issued Certificates of the Successful Course Completion on the last evening. I have not been informed of having to send certificates to the RYA first, but then I have been doing the job for only about 35 years so perhaps they haven't caught up with me yet.

I agree with Cornishman. I've done various RYA theory & practical courses over the last 3 years or so, and on each occasion I received the course completion certificate before I went home. These are now stuck in the appropriate places in my RYA logbook.

Not sure about the Yachtmaster exam yet, but ask me in 4 weeks time once I've taken it ! ! (Wish me luck! )

I must admit to not understanding why the certificate was not issued after the course. I did my YM theory in March and the certificate was issued at the end of the course. I presumed that maybe the course was conducted through a correspondence centre and that there was some delay due to final marking of the papers.

I'm doing the shorebased instructor course 7th/8th May so I'll know for sure then.

Same here. Just finished the YM Shorebased course as a correspondence course. The certificate was issued by the training establishment a few days after I completed the "final assessment". As far as I am aware all the assessment and marking was done by the instructor, not by the RYA.

It's a very small certificate.

This years YM candidates at Chichester finished their course 22 March and are still waiting certs from RYA although all of them know if they passed/failed.

My apologies Cornishman over the incorrect terminology you are quite right.

I've received the little certificate for all the other courses on the last day which is why I'm mystified why this hasn't happened this time around.

Well since posting on this forum I recieved a message from the school telling me the results are in the post.

How's that for a coincidence!?

Still don't know whether I've passed or failed though!

All marking is done by the instructor. I did mine over 5 days. Papers were marked progresively by the instructor.

Hi CH....Just completed and passed my YM shorebased too and yes on the last night after I passed my final test I received my certificate.

There is one thing that puzzles me here there are no central record offices for course completion certificates, so I wonder what motive your tutor has?

To clear up the issue. When the training centre buys the student pack from the RYA it arrives with the certificate. No full time instructor in his right mind would hold onto the certs and create himself more work posting them out later.

Marking for this course is done by the instructor himself, personally I mark the papers while the students are there so that mistakes can be discussed there and then when its all fresh in the mind.

The RYA do not hold a database of who has completed shorebased courses, that should be done by individual schools.

The shorebased course is not a compulsarry pre requisite for the practical exam but makes good sense, I have not yet taught a practical student who has not benifited from a recent theory course or would not have greatly benefited from a theory course. From experience I am very wary about taking bookings for the practical from students who have not taken the theory course first.

I am obviously biased but believe that if you want to take a RYA theory course then you would be best doing it with a full time RYA sea school who run the courses week in and week out all year round.

it may not be compulsory but it certainly helps.I did mine twice once about 25 years ago then again about 10 years ago.

Dont do it like me though,
Ideally do your practical as soon as you can after the theory course whilst still fresh in the grey matter.

Well, I got the results through the post and I passed the theory <huzzah! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif>... however, there was no comment on my papers so I don't know what my percentage was or anything.

A bit dissapointing to say the least.

There is some light at the end though, I was speaking to another instructor at the same centre and they said they've had a big question mark over the chap in question, so at least they know about him.

Hopefully they'll sort him out.
