Hello all!

I am from Dubai, UAE and I am currently doing the Dinghy Level 1 and 2 at Dubai Offshore Sailing Club.
After I'm done with the dinghies I want to do the Day Skipper Practical Course with them.
They require the Day Skipper Theory Course first. Which costs 760 pounds.

So I searched online and found these guys: cmonline.co.uk
They offer a combined Day Skipper & Yachtmaster Theory Course for 415 pounds. If I get this course, after completion will I be able to do the Day Skipper Practical Course with DOSC?
Will I then also have the theory level required for the Yachtmaster Coastal and Offshore?

Or should I just get the 265 pounds, RYA Yachtmaster for Sail & Power from them? Does it have any prerequisites? If I get the Yachtmaster Theory Certificate directly will I be able to do the Day Skipper Practical Course?

Sorry! It's just very confusing!

If you do DS and YM you get the full package, if you go for the YM only package they will assume that you are already at Dayskipper standard. Contact them with any questions, they are a great school. I did my YM theory through them.

I wish I'd just gone straight to the YM Theory and saved a few pounds. However, it really depends upon how much work you're willing to put into teaching yourself various subjects on the syllabus and how comfortable you are with the mathematics of things like secondary port calculations and the trig used in chatwork. They aren't difficult, but if you're fazed by maths then you should maybe do both course and take a more gentle learning curve.

A pass at YM theory will be no problem for DS practical. Some schools will even take your money for the DS Practical without a theory course (or equivalent knowledge) but I wouldn't recommend it because it means you'll get less out of the practical course and will struggle to apply it. I've met lots of people who have given up after DS.

The problem is that the Dubai Offshore Sailing Club demands a Day Skipper Theory certificate for the Day Skipper Practical.
I told them that RYA doesn't require it, but they still don't want to allow me.

:(

To get you started have a look at http://www.aztecsailing.co.uk/newaztec/theory/DSYMtheory.html which covers all the Day Skipper Theory, plus the slightly more advanced YM / Coastal Skipper theory (but does not give you a certificate) and is free.

If you convince them you know the stuff, and can answer the questions, maybe they'll be flexible?

Thank you for the link Barnacle Bill!
I will try to convince the Club to let me sign up for the Practical without a theory certificate.
