rya day skipper qualification

I understand that to be a commercially endorsed Day Skipper successful completion of both the shore-based and practical courses is required. Even the RYA refer to the DS as a "course completion certificate".

You can endorse just the Practical, but without the chartwork component it translates into a lower category on the MCA list which restricts your area of operation.

You are, of course, correct. Practical DS + endorsement is valid for Cat 6 voyages within a whole 3 miles from starting point. Could be good for the Medina ferry?

For what it's worth, when my wife and I decided to explore sailing (as opposed to power boating) we did the CC and DS course back to back. In effect, we did the DS course twice, as the first week was done with two DS students whilst for our DS course we had a couple of CC students as our 'crew'. It worked well: we both had a good working knowledge of IRPCS, chartwork and the like from our diving and power boating but the two weeks of sailing taught us both a good deal about handling a sailing boat in a structured, progressive way.
Only other thing I'd say is do it somewhere warm!

Same category from a commercial PB2. I think the reasoning is that neither course includes much in the way of charts so you need to be doing eye-ball navigation in well-known waters. A 3-mile radius is fine for someone driving a marina launch, or in many places a harbourmaster's RIB. And, indeed, plenty of local ferries and water-taxis.

I completed my Comp Crew on Friday in Gibraltar with AllAbroad sailing. Great people and well organised, plus an added bonus they have nice new boats (circa 12mth old Jeanneau 389's). Weather was great too!
I had been on boats in the past, but I felt starting from scratch so to speak wouldn't do any harm. I am also 70% through the Day Skipper Theory which I think helped me a lot while out on the boat as I could do the navigation/tidal bits with the guys doing the Day Skipper Practical.
If you are pretty proficient with your knots / knowing parts of the boat you could probably skip the Comp Crew as most of the time you are just been directed by the skipper. However I would definitely recommend doing the Day Skipper theory prior to Day Skipper Practical. I'm actually finding the theory part quite enjoyable!

>I completed my Comp Crew on Friday in Gibraltar with AllAbroad sailing
thanks for the info! - (i hadnt seen this school)
- was the food good?
- are you single, or could you say the allocation for singles - are they are put in the saloon berth?
im also thinking of rusailing in lagos if anyone has any experience. Have looked at the canary islands but prices are high and some (gomara) are difficult to get to.

The food was pretty good. They provide breakfast and lunch for everyday and then 3 evening meals are also included. You fend for yourself the rest of the time. As you are in a marina every night there would be nothing stopping you from eating out everynight if that floats your boat!

One of the guys who was on the boat had his Mrs come along and do comp crew, so they shared the vee berth in the bow. The instructor took the saloon berth and the other guy and I had a stern cabin each.

sounds good! many places say there is a supplement for a single cabin, so i was assuming if not paying the supplement id be in the same cabin getting cosy with someone id rather not!
