I have always expected the RYA to look after my interests as a yachty but I have never bothered to join or subscribe to it, except indirectly through yacht club memberships.
Do you think I am a hypocrite?

No. I think you're misguided. I think the RYA gives itself too broad a remit, and is possibly guilty of misselling by using the word 'yachting' in its title. Something like the Cruising Association is much more dedicated to the average cruising sailor, with no interest in jet skis, kite surfing, olympic dinghies, grand prix racing, coaches in RIBs, etc.
(declaration of interest, yes, I'm an active member of the CA)
