Hi there, I am just doing my Day Skipper for a motorcruiser, also done the shorebased Day Skipper. About to start study for the Coastal Skipper shorebased. The question is that I am keen to learn how to sail a yacht - can anyone recommend the best course to take & any recommendations for schools in the NW? I want to be able to sail in the sea but would consider beginning lake sailing first. Thanks

For a course, the RYA COmpetent Crew will do you fine. To gain experience and learn a lot more, try joining a local club. You might need to put in the effort to get to know people to take you sailing, as very few people will offer it to you 'on a plate'.

Good way to learn the sailing part (and a lot cheaper) is to learn to sail a dinghy. This will teach the basics much quicker than on a yacht and will then just need the extra bits such as navigation to be learnt.
