So I pulled it out to take a look. Fifty meters of eight mill beautifully galvinised chain and right in the middle this 'orrible rusty link. Why? How did it get there and now what do I do about it?
If the links not too bad, then wire brush off the rust and use a cold galvanising paint such as Galvafroid on it. If it's at all waisted then chop it out and add a shackle (or a press link if it needs to travel over a windlass gypsy)

I'll vote for that.
Generally a 10% loss in the link material diametre is regarded as being a reject. This applies to Big ships and lifting (as in cranes) type applications. In your average boaties situation it comes back to 'do you feel happy when you look at it?'.
Agree with the Galvafroid, great product. IIRC, you can heat up the steel before applying and then it's nearly as good as hot dip galvanising. Instructions for that maybe on the tin.
Thanks for the help chaps. Sounds painful but ok I,ll wire brush it. Never heard of galvafroid before but it,s on my shopping list now. Thanks again I thought I was going to have to throw it away.
