Hi all
I have an elderly mariner O/B with an integral steel fuel tank problem is the inside is getting a bit rusty and discolours the petrol mix. Its an easy job to remove the tank but whats the best way to remove the rust .I thought about 1/4 filling with paraffin and a handfull of stainless nut and swilling around (big filling cap). Anyone got any suggestions??
Cheers
Terry

I have done what you are Thinking in the past, handfull of small bolts with some deisel I think I used but I dont think that matters, seemed to work ok suppose you could put a new tank on but you would prob have a job getting one, I would suggest a handfull of screws as well sharp bits may get into the corners I would also fit one of those small clear inline fillters just in case the prob comes back and maybe dont leave the tank empty letting it rust again.

Regards Nick in cheshire.

I have also carried out your suggestion for cleaning the inside of a motorcycle petrol tank.
In my case I used cellulose thinners. When cleaned, I used a mixture of paint and thinners to "prime" the inside, followed by same again but with more paint. In my case, using white paint, I could look in to see the level
In your case the paint would have to be proof against the contents.
However, I think I would replace the tank.

Mmmmm not sure if the paint inside the tank is a good idea, had a car once that the tank was coated inside caused me no end of breakdowns with bits of the coating coming off and blocking the fuel line.
