Hi. We use Rustins Danish Oil on our external teak. Given that the tin is almost empty, I'm wondering whether anyone here has tried both the Original Rustins Danish Oil and the newer 'Outdoor' version which contains UV inhibitors. If so, did you notice sufficient difference to justify the increased price? Was it better? TIA!

I used Rustins for a year or two and thought it was fine. I also used it on a shed. I am not convinced the 'Outdoor' version is better than Danish oil, which we have now gone back to. Hadn't noticed much of a price difference but we use a local builders merchants who are usually quite reasonable on price.

No-one...?

Perhaps the lack of response is because very few people use oil on their teak on a boat as it really is not suitable for this application. If I remember rightly you are planning to go south - if so you will find teak oil a real nuisance in hot climes, evenm worse than in UK. It evaporates quickly - despite claims, it does not soak into the wood but sits on top. It attracts dirt and leaves a sticky residue when the liquid content has evaporated.

Better to either leave it bare and wash it regularly, or clean it back, rub it down to get back to its natural colour and then use a long lasting coating such as the International Woodskin suggested by Sailorman. Long term tests (published in Classic Boat) show typically a 5 year life for this type of finish before recoating, even in the med.

Thanks very much for the replies. I will certainly look into the Woodskin before making a purchase. Thanks again!

P.S.:Tranona, you have a very good memory! Sadly we're still firmly fixed to the UK at the moment!

I like Danish Wood Oil. Also Danish bacon and pastries.

I use the one made by Liberon which is based on Tung oil and has UV inhibitors.

Tried all the others - Linseed , Teak etc etc , as mentioned, don't dry and attract dirt.

The one produced by Liberon does dry and is a doddle to apply . I enjoy topping up during the season.

I have known it melt a bit in very hot weather and horizontal surfaces take a real bashing in frost and snow.

I like what I have seen so far of Woodskin and may be tempted at a later date.

Apropos of not much, in Denmark, where I am at the moment they don't eat Danish Bacon and the Danish Pastries are actually Viennese.
They do eat a lot of bread which I presume is what causes a lot of Danish women to have large backsides.....
