Hi All.
Can anyone tell me of a good way to clean rust off stainless steel bottle screws. When the rigging was put up last spring cheap split pins were used and now they are rusted through and they have stained the stainless steel.

I'm just coming to the end of a spray bottle of rust remover called Star Brite an American product.

Its very good at removing rust and rust stains from f/glass. Simply squirt on and leave for 30 mins or so and wash down. Its worked everytime for me, including a friends very nasty rust streak from an anchor locker drain that developed over winter.

Its only ingredient seems to be Sodium Hypochlorite so if you know where you can buy that you'll save the £12 (Ouch) a bottle I payed!

If you mean the things aka Brillo pads don't use 'em.They will only produce more rust stains (in the fullness of time). No place for them on a boat.
Any thing with oxalic acid in it or abrasion with a non ferrous abrasive pad (Scotch-Brite or similar)will do the trick.
Dish washers are really good for cleaning manky metal, but is second only to cleaning rope and head sails in the washing machine for promoting marital disharmony.

hydroflouric acid ....if you can get it. It`s what welders use to pickle the heat discolouration after welding stainless..but it will dull the metal and you need to polish again
