Having an aircraft carrier and planes to go with it puts Russian a large step ahead of UK.

Yup - who are we now to critise , with only a hand full of surface ships .
Let's hope nobody plugged a kettle in on our shadow ship -power trips outs -not enough to run the ship ?
Unless the "new" type 45 has had a £50M repower before its first year in service ?

A service life of half a century is normal for a capital ship. Indeed if Britain's last fleet carrier HMS Ark Royal (R09) wasn't decommissioned after only 25 years (I think due to a defense review) then the Falklands war would never have happened. And old ship can still save many lives.

F78 is in Portsmouth now AKA HMS Kent. It looks old to me but actually is not old at all.
