Want to replace the three hayards that run through the mast on a gin fizz 37.Just puchased her she is in port saint lous. They are part stainless part braid .I can work out the overall lenght but how long should the stainless be. thanks

Don't bother with stainless - much better to use braid on braid or if feeling flush, as suggested, Dyneema, Spectra or similar low stretch rope. much kinder to handle

No doubt stainless steel wire witha rope tail is best for halyards. Dyneema /spectra is an alternative but in my experience stills tretches to some degree. I certainly would not use braid on braid polyester it will stretch too much.
I use spectra 8mm jib halyard (hanked on jibs) and find that it needs retensioning after a few minutes of sailing.21fter. Very annoying with multiple spin runs and jib drops.
Re your question if you can get someone to do the splice wire to rope or can do it your self. (this part is the expensive bit making dyneema more atractive.)
The wire needs to be as long as possible but with adequate rope tail length. so for the main right up the wire should exit the mast and go around a turning block then rope. For a jib the biggest jib hoisted again the wire should exit the mast and turning block. The rope tail needs to eb long enough then for the whole halyard to be more than twice the mast height plus more. good luck olewill
