Hi,

I have had the whole top end of my AQ151A engine rebuilt. I have also fitted a completely new ignition system including a distributor. All the waterway have bee cleaned out and checked. In fact everything except the starter motor and carbs is new. The problem I am having now it is all put back together is that it runs on when the ignition is turned off. Has anyone any ideas as to why this might be?

Dave

Not sure of any ailments that may afflict your particular engine, but if it runs on for a second or two then cuts out this is usually due to excessive heat in the cylinder area i.e. insufficient cooling, very weak mixture etc. I have also seen some engines run continually due to faulty wiring in the ignition/charging system which allows power to bypass the ignition switch and keep the ignition components charged.

As well as all the suggestions below, carbon build up in the heads can glow causing running on (dieselling). Decoke or else trying letting engine idle for a few minutes before turning off.

If it's not overheating then I agree with the timing theory. Ignition too far advanced maybe?

Almost certainly timing incorrect. You say you have had a new ignition system including Distributor. Kind of answers your own question me thinks.

I have checked the timing and the dwell angle both are correct. I have also changed the plugs for Bosch (as per the Volvo manual) and it still runs on a bit. I think it must be the fuel side maybe mixture wrong. The twin carbs though scare me a bit.
