Hi,

Not sure i am allowed on here as i own a motor boat... but here goes!!

Was chatting with a couple at the weekend that own a Westerly 34ft ish Yacht - a lovely vessel i must admit.

We both agreed that there are lousy motor boat skippers and lousy yacht skippers so that caused no friction!

I was curious to what the forumites thought the running costs are for a sailing boat compared to a motor boat?

Cheers,

Craig.

Agree the Westerly is a fine looking yacht, am I over simplifying your question but providing no gear failure isn't it the fuel cost! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Happy Boating.

what type of motor boat, would you be happy running at hull speed, the capital cost of sails, rigging etc. Invested would provide a fair amount of milage,For a well designed displacement hull.. A planing hull would be another story

BMIF data shows motorboat owners invest little in their boats, but typically own them for only 3 years before upgrading. Sailboat owners keep boats for an average 8 years, and make considerable capital investment in their boats in the meantime. Not sure how to cost that difference in ownership behaviour.

Don't forget a sail boat costs much more TIME than a motor boat, both in maintenance and on passage.

Hi Trevor,

No not overly simplyfying it at all - i had kinda worked out that fuel was a big difference in terms of running costs!

I was told when i was looking at boats initially that there was little difference - as yachts need new sails every 2 - 3 seasons so it is about the same...

My mrs and i are going on a sailing experience weekend later in the year, and was wondering how the 2 compare in terms of costs over a year...

Mind you - it might be that i have just spent a fortune on stern drive Oil, anodes, antifoul and so on that thsi brought it to my attention!!!

Cheers,

Craig.

New sails every 2-3 seasons is more frequent than most cruising sailors would replace their sails. Racers who have lots of money will replace that frequently. I would say every 5 to 10 years is more typical for every one else.
