Running backstays, how problematic

Re: Useless bit of wire rope

That is a useful observation!

I modified my bowsprit two years ago so that it can run in fairly easily - it is some 12ft outboard - but I would probably be un-keen on housing it in a blow. The drill is easy enough - take the heelrope round the score, through a snatch block at the stem, back to the windlass drum, heave tight, knock out fid, yank on traveller outhaul and in it comes - but it is one more operation at the narrow end of the boat.

For anyone who is thinking of converting to a retractable bowsprit, one tip that I would like to pass on is - make sure that the roller in the bitts, above the bowsprit, is of reasonably large diameter - four or five inches at least.

Re: Useless bit of wire rope

To get the bowsprit in, without using a roller in the bits (I just have a pin), loosen everything off then pull on the tail end of the outermost forestay (which is led inboard). Simplicity in action! The bowsprit in question hangs about 15 feet outboard.
