Last year i discovered a system to run an engine on coal!Of course it was first realized by the French!

It was in a German museum a way to run cars on coal!Later i found a secondhand "gazogen" for sale price 1200€.I photographed it copied the plans and have now built my own!!

I would have stayed until until the weekend to watch a demonstration at the meuseum they explained it takes about an hour to get it running, unfortunately it was then we semi sank for the second time, last year not being one of our best.

By then i had a large electric pump which i had running when the Police arrived, someone on the pontoon had reported me as a "polluter" though id explained that tea bags are bio degradable he thought i was now cleaning my bilge! What an idea!

The police told me i would be fined!Asked for my papers & passport while they unplugged the pump! The boat slowly began sinking again ,i saw it was lunch time i pushed the evacuation pipe further overboard and well into the water, the police said "papers"!!

I waded below and changed the pump plug to the inverter the batteries would run it without worry, the pump silently running no water splashing,i took off my pullover and felt down for the bilge pump skin fitting and pushed in a wooden plug, the pump needed a larger hose than the fitting and i had used an old bit of hose to make the size until i fitted the new pump we now had.It kept the bilge and sole clean.when the water wasent muddy!

I looked at the time and at the capitanerie at last he and the secretary were leaving,i went into the cockpit,Stella was comeing back with our shopping.I introduced her to the police and told her she had given our papers to the capitanerie!!

In German i said i couldent find our papers becouse we have given them to the capitan and pointed to the building, just ask them for them.Off they went telling me not to leave the boat i took in our lines,as they went around the corner the engine going, and cast off the last line!

As we left the small port far to quickly the police came back shouting "Halt" some minutes later the police car was on the road beside us its siren going lights flashing the driver shouting and pointing!

I put my hand to my ear and shouted "i cant understand you your sirens so loud" they shouted again then without the siren shouted "halt" I shouted back i cant stop hear its forbidden and i cant turn thankfully they ran out of road,i waved good bye,and crossed my fingers

After what seemed a lifetime waiting for a police launch we left Germany! After putting a good distance between it and us we tied up checked the plug and went into the village to eat food we dident find but a jug of wine and some bread and meat.I was exhasted!

Stella then began shouting at me?Why hadent i changed the skin fitting why hadent i bought a proper pump why do i always leave doing things so late---Peww

Back in France between antifouling rigging or cleaning jobs she keeps arranging for me,to reduce my leval of povety so that i (she) can buy underware and shoes for me?Ive been building my own "gazogen" Its two small metal drums joined together with chimney flew and a car radiator(which may have to be changed?)

The coal goes into the first drum once lit the lid is tightly closed, the smoke is then drawn off and passed over the second drum which is full off old wine corks, which dries the "gas" this is then passed through the car radiator to cool it then by way of an old car turbo run with an electric car window winder motor fed to the engine!!

So far we have borrowed one of the village lawnmowers they leave hear,We added an off valve for the petrol, once running we cut the petrol supply and feed the coal gas to the engin direct. And it carries on running!!!!!

Soon we will be driveing it but first we have to put the "gazogen" on a trailor.

Soon mobos will be able to load a few hundredweight of coal into their cockpit and run on coal!!!Once the lawnmower trials are compleated we will be looking for a volenteer mobo!

Of course many vehicles were run on coal gas during the war, but I thought they needed a storage tank or balloon to store a 'buffer' of gas?

The Germans also ran army vehicles on coal gas, the retort being a 45 gallon drum, but I think they had a storage tank as well. How do you get rid of the sulphur?

The corks take it out.Yes the gas bag was used but for that you need a large space and a heavy weight, but the correct weight to feed gas into the engine at the pressure needed per power setting. At least i think so.

mobos are perfect becouse most only have 2 and a half power settings slow and almost flat out! The half setting is just before reaching the port or anchor place when "Quarter throtel" is used.

The electric motor can be regulated with a rehostat. How long the "scrubers" will dry and remove bye products is as yet unknown.Best is to open lots of bottles and save the corks ready to replace the scrubber material when needed

Either the mobo will have to keep in touch with sailboats or gin manufactures will have to be encouraged to use corks and not crown caps

Have you got permission from NASA (or ESA) for this? You sound as though you are well on the way to the first orbital lawnmower and to re-defining "space ship"!

I know Rolls Royce were playing with coal for aircraft, believe it or not. It was a matter of having finely pulverised coal that would "flow" and could be injected directly in to a gas turbine.

Good idea

But don't forget that Mr Diesel originally designed his engine to run on coal. Specifically on coal dust.

Perhaps with a little persuasion Mr Volvo might produce a kit to attach to his engines.

My boat used nearly 20kg of coal this weekend, and that was just to keep warm!

This one runs on coal. Built ca 1894, this picture taken in 1954 after rebuild.

Very nice boat.
Today we drove the lawnmower about our port went quite well that is until the commune truck passed. They stopped and went mad!We tried to explain we were helping the environment, they wouldn't listen

The usual gardeners are still on holiday, they wouldn't have said a thing! This lot got more and more angry shouting about police and pay for the damage? Then they asked what we think were doing there,

All the time the lawnmower was ticking over, then it coughed (back fired)and the flexable tube went "bpooof"! and shot off causing the engin cover to bend its hinges! That was enough as there were more of us than them they went to get the cheif!

What a luck they wernt equipped with a phone! We got our gazogen off rolled it on its trailer to an old bunker we use, another closed the engine cover having straightened the hinges and we put it back in its shed

We closed the boats and took the tender to town (an old bosten whaler with an old 20hp)We went across to look at the lunch menu,it was a good one,Saumon frais marinè, then Magret de canard à ma façon, for afters, Terrine de chocolat noir à la crème Anglaise

As we were in total shock we ordered a good white wine as the wine from the Bordeaux region is a bit expensive now terroists order it,we went for a cote chalonnaise, a Rully which is better than Mercurey and less costly in this cafe,we ordered 2 bottles of domaine du chapitire!

With a good wine the sun giving a good impression of summer the world was again well;its amazing how a really good wine makes the world seem wonderful! As lunch progressed 2 more bottles being ordered the thought that i only had 6s4d for January crossed my mind!

We decided that as the powers that be might think i had something to do with the lawnmower trouble and upset the temporary gardeners i should leave for a couple of weeks. As i haven't been to Elba yet it seemed a good idea then i could collect the bitter oranges for the marmalade and top up with "refreshments"

Now i just have to explain to Stella why i cant stay.

When i get back we can try again, when i suggested useing Daves motorbike there was silence? He dident seem at all enthusiatic?
