Needs some simple technical help. I have the high speed inflator for my tender etc, it attaches to the battery terminals which is a real pain so looking to lengthen the wire (by about 5 metres) and also change the clips to a 12v cigarette socket so I can simply plug in from the cockpit and through the window to either bow or stern. Is this doable without affecting performance and is there a certain grade or material I need etc (also where would you buy this as have found ebay and Amazon usually very poor quality for this type of stuff?)
 
I have a high speed LVM inflator. It's a great bit of kit but it draws quite a hefty current - about 25 amps iirc. You'd need quite substantial cable but, more to the point, I think you might find yourself with a molten cigarette socket plug, the first time you try to use it.....

You can certainly put a plug on it rather than clips, I have done, but a lighter socket is not up to the task. I used a waterproof Bulgin plug rated at 30 amps.

The size of wire needed (both to the socket and from the socket to the pump) will depend on the distance you want to run, but again it's likely to be quite hefty. Before I got round to fitting the plug, I extended the cable with a few metres of 2.5mm2 I had handy - this got noticeably hot and the pump lost most of its power and became unusable.

Have had the same problem and run cable out of saloon deck hatch but not ideal
Might be simpler and safer to buy a battery pack from halfords ?I have used with one of these electric pumps in past but doesn't work with all packs
 
Thanks all. I've decided to live with the battery clips but lengthen the wire and if that works ok will look at a more substantial socket you've mentioned. Glad I checked as I'd have plugged into my boat 12v cigarette socket and probibally fried the socket so thanks again.
 
Do a search for Marinco trolling motor socket, high current capacity, good quality, pricey, works fine! Wire the socket (via a fuse) from the battery to a convenient position.
 
Get yourself a 12v Battery pack which was my solution. Really easy to use, light'ish and lasts a long time. I wanted a power socket close to the dinghy but it was a lot of faffing around and cost, this was the better solution.

If your system was installed properly you'd just have blown the fuse rather than fried anything. That's what they're there for.

Of course, many boat wiring systems are not installed properly... :)

Thanks ASM, one quick question, I assume the fuse goes in the live lead to the socket. Think this is the easiest solution and will run it off the Bow Thruster battery which is closest to the bow (through a hatch) where I will inflate/deflate.

May end up going down this road but am going to try the socket first.
