We were awoken in Yarmouth this morning by another boat crashing into the side of our boat after leaving his mooring. We came up on deck to find three or four people on board the said vessel pushing off our gaurdrails, having rubbed all the way down the side of our boat. They did have some fenders out, but still made direct hull to hull contact. I know these things do happen, but when they finally extracted themselves, they turned around and motored striaght past without a word of apology or concern!!. I now find I have a bent stanchion and small scratch on the gel coat. Nothing major, but annoying none the less, not least because of the failure to stop.
I have the name of the boat. Does anyone know of any way I might be able to trace the owner?

If offending boat registred with small ships register try link here for details of how to search SSR.

Otherwise presumably Harbour Master should have some record?

Why not name & shame on this forum????

That's awful...I know these things do happen sometimes...but it is rather ungentlemanly to not apologise

Rude awakening - that's absolutely dreadful!

You've been encouraged to name and shame; do. Perhaps put a new post with plenty of detail. Hopefully someone will be able to help you. Then you simply must persue them.

Have to say, a similiar thing happened once to me whilst berthed in Tarbert, Loch Fyne. Actually knew the people who instead of putting the boat astern, gave full throttle forward and took out a stantion and damaged the toerail badly. They provided their insurance details, which were pursued, but hardly an apology at the time and subsequently never a mention of the trouble and hassle they caused over trying to get the boat repaired. Talk about seeing people in a totally different light!

Anyway, very best of luck in getting justice, even if it ends up in the small claims court.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I know I ought to name and shame, but somehow I'm a bit reluctant. The damage, whilst annoying, is not really much considering the noise and commotion. I'm not sure I'll get any recompense and I have calmed down a bit now!
I shall certainly let him know the score if I see him again though.
