Take a look at the bearing and seal which resides at the top of the rudder tube inside the lazarette, perhaps just above the water line.
The lip seal is metal. Perhaps bronze or brass. I’m certain it’s original from 1996. It’s got a stainless spring within for tension of the rubber seal no doubt.
My question is does this need to be replaced with a metal type? It seems most these days are a rubber compound.
Additionally what type is generally used for a stainless rudder shaft? A standard oil nitrile type?
