Fellow sailors.

Yesterday I was hit very hard by a boat during the very early stages of the race. I was in the white flag fleet and think that the other boat was also in that group. As you can see from the picture the damage was extensive and caused immediate flooding and only because I took immediate action was I able to avoid a major ingress of water. The other boat clearly sustained some damage because part of the stem head fitting was left in my galley. Unfortunately I was too busy saving my own life to see his name or sail number and he didn't make any effort to contact me, stay with me or report the incident (as yet). If anybody was witness to the accident or may be able to help in any way I would appreciate a PM. At the moment I feel very lucky to be alive (I was only 2ft from the point of impact) and if I am very lucky I may get my boat back for next season. At the time of the incident my sail number (2285) was very clearly displayed on either side of the cockpit.

Hope you race was better than mine!

Yoda

I'm apalled to see the damage and hear that the boat that hit you didn't get in touch with you a) to check that you are OK b) to agree the circumstances of the collision and sort out the liability / insurance.

Can the committee help with list of starters of classes that were around you at the time?

What about the insurance companies, boatyards or marine surveyors? The other boat may need repairs and will have been in touch with a yard/surveyor and most likely their insurance company.

Once again, sincere sympathy and hope you find the other party & get your boat back in full working order as soon as possible.

Thank you, I will be on to all of that tomorrow. To keep the water out I had to keep the genoa backed and run off downwind but he should have tried and I did put out a very clear message that I had been holed. Difficult to describe the feeling and the focus was on not sinking.

Indeed I was, because of other boats was unable to change course enough or tack to avoid a collision without causing another. Blame isn't the issue just trying to ensure an easier job for both insurers.

Sorry to hear your news and see the damage.

It seems like there were quite a few collisions out there yesterday. To help anyone who might have seen your colision, it might help to have some more details of your boat, and the approximate position and time if you know, so if people were around that area at that time they might remember seeing a damaged boat limp back.

You might get lucky if they had a GPS tracker.

Fingers Xed for you

Sorry to see that Yoda, let's hope the conscience of the other fellow sailor has made them come forward... bad form if they don't:mad:

They might have been in as much trouble as you were, and by the time they'd got themselves sorted, you'd been lost to sight. Any reports to the ISC? Worth asking now the dust has settled, coz I suspect the committee might have had a heavy workload yesterday.

Looks nasty, I'm guessing it will be an insurance claim.

If you need several quotes then feel free to use our site...

Hope you have some luck finding the culprit, although I have usually found there is little compensation even if you were stand-on vessel.

Might be best to hand it to your insurer to fight out for you.

I suspect looking at the organisers list of DNF's would be a good place to start. Hold on to the bit of stemhead it may be able to find the boat it matches!

Nasty damage. It looks as if he really hit hard. That's some serious damage. Well done for keeping your head!

Thinking about it you should have protested the other boat, it would be wrong that they might get a result when they shouldn't. They are potentially at fault for hitting you, whatever you might have done or not done. They also should have stopped racing and made sure you were OK and they could or should have been DSQ'd for not doing so, it's written in the racing rules of sailing.
A protest hearing may make your insurance claim a bit easier.

sorry to hear of your prob but can you post photos of the stem hd fitting it might narrow down the class it belonged to

Not a criticism of you Yoda, but I am puzzled by the number of people on here and locally who have suffered or heard of damage and been surprised about it. If 1900 boats try race on one shortest route round a small island, in up to 30kts of wind, there are bound to be problems.

What is appalling is that the other guy hasnt come forward. Hopefully the tips given by others will help you find him.

Based on only a little knowledge, I'd say you are into £10k there, depending on how she is on the inside.
