I've just entered on line before next Saturday's "early bird" deadline.

In previous years there's been an opportunity to make a donation to the race charity as part of the registration fee. I suspect most entrants made this donation as it was so easy to do. This year it didn't seem to be part of the process.

Did I just overlook it, or have the organisers missed a trick this year?

After last years fiasco we have decided not to enter but still race as an unofficial entry. I fail to see the point of paying them £57 for a tankard and a few other 'freebies'.

We fully understand your comments regarding last year’s race. The Island Sailing Club Round the Island Steering Group and Sailing Committee have spent a vast amount of time since last June analysing the race organisation and we are confident that lessons have been learned. If you visit our website www.roundtheisland.org.uk you can read our answers to the main criticisms from competitors in 2006.

We are most concerned to read your statement that you intend to participate in the Race without having officially entered. Obviously we cannot prevent you from doing this, however we consider it would be very unfair of you to compromise the results of other bona fide entrants who would naturally assurme that you were racing.

In conclusion we ask that you reconsider your intentions and hope that we may look forward to receiving an official entry from you.

Dave L is quite right (forum 16th March 2007). In previous years the Island Sailing Club has included an opportunity to donate to charity on the entry form and over the years we have been very grateful to our competitors for their generosity. In 2006, £30,000 was raised to support the Club’s chosen charities for the year - Prostate Research Campaign UK and the St Mary’s Hospital (Newport, Isle of Wight) specialist cancer treatment centre.. However, we realised that our competitors raise funds for a range of good causes and this year we decided to open up the opportunity so that any charity can benefit, rather than it being the choice of the Island Sailing Club alone. We hope that as many sailors as possible will join in and one easy way to raise funds is through setting up a page with justgiving.com. Our website has the details www.roundtheisland.org.uk. This system also enables non-sailing supporters of charity to make donations and broadens the appeal.
