RPi disk storage

I am back home with a spare RPi and have got it booting from a SSD. Not quite sure why it took me so many tries, nor why it eventually worked but system now has OpenCPN on it and no SD disk.

However, I am having a problem with the o-charts plug in. It says it is installed but then goes missing and the o-charts tab doesn't appear at all. What might be the problem? Usually permissions but how can I tell what user (pi, me, root) I installed OpenCPN with?

I would check Ocpn is fully updated & you have the latest O-chart plugin. I seem to remember there was an update a few months ago to the plugin. My ocpn is 5.6.2 & o-chart plugin is 1.0.17.0

Once booted open file manger & check the home folder name, thats the user its installed under assuming you can see the ".opencpn" folder in that home folder.

All installed today with the package manager, though my OpenCPN is 5.2.4 and o-chart is 1.0.29

It seems to be installed under root. Not sure how that happened. I re-installed from my own user directory and still the same things happening.

Just got rid of my old 12v pc and installed a Raspbery Pi for nav (displays on a laptop replacement screen). I am wondering what people do for storage on these devices. Open Office is required and the usual admin stuff. Suggestions?
Hi dgadee,
I realize the initial post was a couple of months ago but hopefully you're still around. :)
I notice you said that used a replacement laptop screen for the display. At the moment I'm using a 12v tv screen via hdmi and find it uses a lot of power as you might expect. Changing to a laptop screen may help me reduce that usage. I'm interested to know any details you can provide on how you did it from a connection point of view. Laptop screens I've changed before have all been ribbon connected. Do I need an interface box or connection of some sort? Any information gratefully received.

You need to buy the screen and also the control unit. I saw how to do it on YouTube - and to make sure I got the correct driver unit I bought the screen first and used the info on it for the order. The control unit for mine was LP154WX4 TL. It cost about £20 or so. The screen was Acer Aspire 1410 15.4" Laptop Screen and cost about £30.

This gives you a screen and a unit which has ribbons to attach to the screen. I have attached the screen to the plywood panel above my chart table (very basic - four screws off the screen where the wide screw heads just hold the screen in place). The ribbons connect to the power supply and the RPi.

Edit: these prices are start of Covid. I wasn't able to get out to the boat until this year again.

To report back, o-charts gave me instructions on what to do. All a bit roundabout but I got there (not using Flatpak). They suggest that they always advise users of OpenCPN to install OpenPlotter because it will automatically update OpenCPN rather than have to do it manually.

I had also installed the 32 bit OS and they said it was better to use the 64 bit install, so I had to do that again.

However, all working. Booting off an SSD and able to install o-charts directly.
