I've got a corporate days drinking, sorry sailing from here on Friday. Does anybody know if there are any transport links back to Southampton from the YC or Marina.
Also - whats the YC bar/food like? Is it a posh gaff, will tey let us East Coast mudpluggers in?

I must admit to being a bit ignorant about yacht clubs as I had thought this was the one in Ocean Village next door to where I work, but it appears to be in Hamble. As the RYA describe it as "one of the senior yacht clubs" I expect it's all highly civilised in a 19th century sort of fashion: G & T before dinner, jackets and ties in the lounge, children to be seen and not heard, etc.; just like all the East coast yacht clubs I have been to, really.

There is actually a Hamble train station, a short stagger from the Jolly Sailor which in turn is about 15 minutes walk from Hamble, tho' accessible from the water. There are also probably buses from the village square, twice a fortnight.

Are you confusing Hamble with Bursledon ?

The Jolly Sailor of Howards Way fame is in Bursledon (although on River Hamble) and the train station that everybody parks their car in is Bursledon.

There is a bus from Hamble to Southampton although it will take around one hour.

Suggest you try and get a taxi with a few others to keep the cost down.

The RSYC is a lovely club occupying a great view over the Hamble and is often used to host regatta dinners etc.

However I'm sure you will be accepted in to the bar afterwards in reasonable state of dress.

Is anybody in your party a member as I'm not sure of the rules of entry.

However you may get away the 'visting yachtsman' ploy but I would check first.

It's quite smart, but I expect they will let you in /forums/images/icons/smile.gif. Don't know what the food's like - I think the last time I ate there was in about 1970.

Bursledon (i.e Jolly Sailor) is the nearest train station and there is the occasional bus from Hamble into Southampton, but if you want to complete your journey home in under a day, I'd suggest taxiing it to Southampton Station, from whence it's just over an hour to Waterloo via a fast, regular and (by UK standards) reliable train service. Bursledon's a bit more than a 15 minute walk from Hamble and it's very much a branch line.

Thanks all - apparantly we've got a "room booked". Never stayed at a YC so salubrious they have rooms.
Looks like a taxi to Southampton then.

Some of the rooms are really tucked into the eaves. I remember staying in one, where I could not stand up straight (I'm 6'6). Nice bit of character though.

If you can walk from The Jolly Sailor to the RSYC in 15 minutes - what are you on, 'cos I want some?. It's a good 45 minutes or more for us mere mortals who are actually used to walking.

Think he was confusing Hamble with Bursledon. However, in spite of what I said above, I have now remembered that there is a Hamble Station - about 15 minutes' walk out of the village - as well as the one at Bursledon. I'd still get a Taxi to Southampton, nevertheless, because I'd want to complete the journey in somewhat less time than it takes to do the ARC. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

As an ex-Hamble resident, Hamble station has frequent trains to Southampton (every 30 mins or so) and is about a 20 minute walk from the Royal Southern straight up north along Hamble Lane. The RSYC is very smart, but don't get caught wearing sailing gear in the bar like I once did - you'll get your knuckles rapped!

Hi there, if you do a search on Royal Southern Yacht Club you will bring up their Web site which will give you most of the information you want. Don't let the silver service put you off, its really quite a nice place.
