Thank you, I keep telling my son to apply for membership, I think he's up to snuff.

... where his talent comes from, a total mystery !

I enjoyed looking at them There was a thread a week or two back about the show they used to put on at Earl's Court Boat Show. On the whole, I found this collection to be rather bland or over-dramatic, but I must stick to my usual dictum that one shouldn't judge a work without actually seeing it. I was also amused to see some pictures by St John Rosse. One of the portraits at Brittannia College is by him, and we bought a small oil of his at the D'Art gallery nearby, for a lot less than the prices here.

I quite like his stuff. His treatment of the sunlight on the water in the painting entitles "A busy pair" is very pleasing.

You can often pick up paintings cheaper than a gallery's asking price. Artists need galleries to get their works seen, but on the whole get a rotten deal from them; they often receive only 50% of the sale price, and that after the artist has paid for the framing and catalogue, then they get paid maybe 90 days later (if they're lucky). If you can track down the artist to his studio and deal privately it can work out better for all concerned. Mind you, there are many art buyers who don't have the courage of their own convictions, preferring to have their hands held, and to be told by a dealer that what they are buying is a good picture.

Years ago I picked up a framed print in a junk shop for a tenner tremendously boisterous seas in a gale off some Dutch harbour, one wonders where the artist had been and that his easel didn’t blow away, great picture in many ways not so realistic as modern paintings but had more mystery....

If you like sunlight on warter check out Sorrolla,Spanish painter......if you don’t already know of him?
I’m a big fan. Tho I didn’t manage to get to the Sorolla show in London last year, I have got the catalogue “Sorolla; master of light” (which is magnificent).

i have a painting by Russian artist Yuri Krotov which is something of an hommage to Sorolla.

Went to an exposition in Madrid which was the first time I had seen his work, blew my head away .....

His way Sorolla paints fabrics is just as amazing as his treatment of water. I love this one of sewing a sail

and here's one combining his mastery of water and fabrics....

When I worked in the City in the 1970s and 80s , there was always an annual exhibition of the Wapping group of amateur marine artists. I think it was held in the Whitechapel Gallery.

An amazing display of talent and we still have a couple of paintings of tugboats by Sydney Cardew, one of the star exhibitors.
