Royal Gourock Yacht Club Moorings

There are moorings at Fairlie, as I expect you know, but I'd be leery of anything on a west-facing shore. "Yachts Blown Ashore At Fairlie" seems to be headline after every in-season gale ...

Fairlie looked promising but when I asked around, I started hearing negative stories of rough seas and difficulty getting your dinghy/tenders ashore.

I watched the RGYC launch in operation last Sunday and it looks very capable even in a chop.

Owners of moorings in PB thought they were exempt from paying a levy to the Crown Estates as they believed they had rights under a Royal Charter

Yes, for some years - before I joined the MA - they paid their fees into a holding account pending a court decision. There is a brief account of the case (a recycled CEC press release) at https://littleshipclub.co.uk/news/judge-rules-scottish-moorings. It was all pretty good humoured, but the Brandanes are a stubborn bunch.

Newcomers to the sport may not realise just how contentious was the decision by the Crown to start charging for moorings - and to offer nothing in return. Port Bannatyne was the last skirmish in that fight. Since then, the CE has significantly upped their game, as the amount spent on Coast Communities project shows. And, by odd coincidence, I am currently liaising with them about a mooring which has been laid 40' from mine (plenty of room is available) and about which the MA is unwilling to do anything.
