Hi all

I can see two obvious routes back, the first one is to cross directly to St Catherine’s point then hug the coast, the second is to stay south of the shipping lane trace line NE to somewhere near Cap Gris-Nez and then cross to Dover there.

Which would you choose and why?

Not a lot in it I reckon. Other things being equal, I would tend to stay foreign, just for the fun of it, but the tidal streams will be stronger on the northern route and it may depend on how this affects your planning, given that the ’system’ moves to the east.

I'd aim a little more east from Cherbourg to perhaps east of Selsey Bill as the traffic separation scheme lanes proper don't start until later although the big stuff keeps more or less to the lanes.
Crossing near Dover means you tend to mix it with cross channel ferries etc as well.

I think wind forecast would have a big influence in my choice.

Also perhaps, timing, I might prefer to pass Dover (or Calais?) itself in the daylight.

Is 'beyond Dover' UK or 'mainland'?

Depends if you want to stop anywhere on the way eg.Hornfleur
Ok, Cherbourg to (say) Ouistreham, pop round to Honfleur, then to Fecamp and then cross more or less to Brighton ish then carry on. If you have the time it's a nice little cruise with opportunities for shore leave.

I get the impression that he wants to do the trip more or less in one go rather than do any sightseeing on the way. Honfleur s lovely, f course, but Normandy and Honfleur really deserve a cruise of their own, if only to recover from the shock of going to Erik Satie’s house.

Thanks all, crossed ne from Cherbourg, round the south coast, dodged the ferries at dover and popped in to ramsgit for 5 hours to wait out the tide change.
Back in Shotley now, WTF is this weather doing ?.?

It has just prepared itself for your return, to ensure that feel at home.
