Single handed crossing, St Malo to Point-à-Pitre, in approximately 7 days and 17 hours (av speed 19.11 knots) breaking Laurent Bourgnon's 1998 record of 12 days and 8 hours.

The last race (albeit in stormier circumstances) was won by Michel Desjoyeux in 13 days 7 hours and the first race in 1978 by Mike Birch in 23 days and 7 hours.

Things have come a long way in a short period of time.

I have just returned from a week in France.

It seemed that every news report had coverage of the race. Every time we went into a bar, there it was on the box!

What a contrast to the way the sport is almost totaly ignored in the UK!

It would be on the box in the UK if we ever won! But then of course it wouldnt be on the box in France

In any case, sailing like sex is for doing rather than watching.

The Aussies like the French are passionate about sailing - 2 hours live coverage of the start of the Sydney-Hobart race on national TV when I was there. We are lucky to get a mention of the Velux race on our local news...
