I think this makes it very clear that it's a clove hitch.

So what happens if you tie a RTATHH in one of the wrong ways above ? Presumably it comes loose ?

Certainly a lark's head pulls through at a load that a clove hitch does not. Although with a round turn around a rough cleat or bollard, in reality it would probably stay put ok.

But even if it works, a "round turn and lark's head" is not a round turn and two half-hitches.

........Incidentally, I've started using a modified version for my fenders, it probably has a name. Clove hitch around the rail, then two half hitches, which it seems form a second clove hitch.......

+1 Always use that method when leaving the boat for a while (when SWMBO is not looking).... never lost a fender.....yet!
