Ouch indeed. Without knowing the facts of the case this sounds like very poor thinking on someone's part. I hope Snow Leaopard and the other boat were not too severely damaged; it seems to have been a bad year for multis in our part of the world. I presume you heard what happened to Paradox?

My favourite is a lazyman's hitch, made in a very long mooring line when you can't be bothered finding the free end.
Double loop round turn, then two half hitches done with the rope doubled.

This is surely a "round turn and two half hitches on a bight", a highly specialist knot useful in some difficult and extreme situations but not suitable for beginners. At least that's what I tell people when they ask "what the hell is that?" /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I once decided that the best way to tie up a 15' fishing boat briefly to a handrail on some steps was clearly a highwayman's hitch. Normally used to secure a horse for a quick getaway during a robbery or a quick pint, the knot is almost instant to apply and comes away instantly with a sharp tug on the working end. Parked horses have different dynamics to moored boats however and the sharp tug from the bow produced interesting and less stylish results than I'd hoped for. So while this remains a favourite knot, I now only recommend it to others...
