Is the Isle of Wight a mark of the course all the way round? Is the Island a continuous obstruction ? Would it make any difference to the way you would sail it rules wise?

Re: Roun the Island Racing Rules Question

The Sailing Instructions normally state which way you have to leave the marks. ie: IOW to be left to port/starboard.

From this year's Sailing Instructions:

8.2 Course
Boats shall cross the starting line to the Westward, round the Needles Lighthouse, pass St. Catherine's Point, round Bembridge Ledge Buoy with all marks being left to PORT and finish by crossing the CORRECT finishing line for their fleet from east to west.

Bembridge Ledge Buoy is the only mark for the RIR now that the forts are no longer used.

It was obvious from the way that some yachts sat on parts of the IOW that it isn't a mark - otherwise by being in contact with it they would have been disqualified /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Well yes, but a mark of the course you're about to pass and an obstruction are basically the same rules wise.

As an aside when I joined these forums I was surprised by the fact that there were very few posts on the "racing rules" and interpretation there-of.

Mature reflection on this matter would lead a chap to believe that this is not, altogether, a bad thing.

We've had a few recently, time for a moratorium perhaps?

They have the potential to become incredibly tedious and will only make people tetchy and irritable.

Then vote with your mouse and don't read them.

Racing is another very valid type of sailing. Why would a sailing forum ban questions on a specific type of sailing?

So the racing marks are those listed and the island other than the marks is an obstruction?

[/ QUOTE ]
The marks of the course are those listed. The IW would be an obstruction in the same way that any other bit of land is an obstruction.

[/ QUOTE ]You are quite right. The other implications are that you can touch the Island if you must, but there would be no penalty. I also reckon that you can call for water under any circumstances if you felt you were going to go aground except when you sailed between a boat and the Island from behind.
