I've got a holiday cottage in Padstow and I'm there for a few weeks this July.

Last year I took my Prestige 32 from Lymington to Fowey to be fairly close by.

I'm planning the same trip this year. However, I'm also thinking about whether to go round the corner and up to Padstow for a couple of weeks.

I've had my boat a couple of years (and its predecessors - a Ribeye RIB and a Yamarin 68DC- for a couple of years before that), I've done all the courses and I've got all the gear (and some idea)

That rocky bottom left bit of Cornwall frightens me, though

What do you all think?

What extra precautions and kit should I take? Where should I start from?

Any advice greatly received!

Thanks

Mike

A good passage plan and the right weather window.

Lands end is no more dangerous than Portland in the right conditions

Enjoy the trip and have fun

Hi Mike

Obvious choice is Falmouth, you're good for distance and its fine to hold on there if you are waiting for a weather window.

From there you can nip to Newlyn, they seem to take all comers there now so handy of you want a 30 mile reduction in the hop to Padstow.
You could however think about a westward hop to St Mary's, have a night or two and then head eastish to Padstow, esp if you can see a weather pattern that is going to suit or if you are aiming for perfect wind with tide, which you shoild be :) to reduce the risk.
My view is that go when the weather is right and you will be fine, it will not be any worse than Lyme Bay but push the boat into anything more than a 15kt wind and you could see all sorts of mess out there.

See you on the water!

I live near Lymington & have done this many times, both ways, should you need someone to hold your hand.
Gives me an excuse to visit grandchildren down there.;)
