We are planning a trip to Southern Ireland from the Hamble, south coast.
As the route takes us round Lands End we are looking at marinas and ports to stop, from Newlyn, Penzance, the next marina appears to be Swansea then Milford Haven (we are intending a stop here)

So it would appear that we would have to anchor and tender in as being shaft drive cannot dry out
Not yet looked up Reads, only Navionics on ipad

My question is: where are there suitable stop offs on the way to Milford Haven, with anchorages, tender access to facilities (read pub) and protected from Atlantic rollers

We are in a 40' cruiser draught of 1.3 and not really into passages longer that half a day
Like to cruise at 7 kn but can push it to above 20 if bank mortgage allows

Many thanks

From South Cornwall you are best to head straight to Milford Haven, simply as it's a long way out of your way to go along the North Cornish coast, yes it's a fair trip but it the weather is right for North Cornwall it's also good for Milford so I would advocate just keep going and get that leg done.

Lousy infrastructure from Falmouth right around to the Bristol Channel....We could do with a marina on the north coast of Cornwall, or a bloody big canal between Fowey & Padstow :)

+1 to that !

As has been said, St Ives is not great as it dries and the bay is open to the north. It's a long old haul around from Falmouth especially if there's a decent swell coming in from the Atlantic. Last time we did Falmouth to St Ives we ended up pretty much surfing past Cape Cornwall (I know I've just run down St Ives but I had to visit for sentimental reasons :) ). If the tide suits for getting into Padstow that wouldn't IMHO add a huge amount to the journey and would give a break before heading to Milford Haven if you have the time. Personally I think I'd be thinking along those lines depending on the crew and how long a stretch you're prepared to go for on each leg (which is related as implied in the question to how much diesel you're prepared to spend ! )

You could always pop into Bude if you fancy taking on the sea lock, major upgrade to the lower basin since the gates were fixed and the canal dredged.

Not a stop for the faint hearted unless the sea conditions are favourable!

Also, if the OP hasn't taken in the Isles of Scilly prior to the trip then they should be a factor...yes it's and extra 30 miles on the west and east legs but three hours from Falmouth in fair weather and good shelter while you wait for the wind to flip and run north east up to Milford Haven...

Anyone ever taken shelter/anchored at Lundy?

Anyone ever taken shelter/anchored at Lundy?

Many years ago in my sailing days depending on conditions although I don't think I would to rely on it as my only option. Also used to pop into Clovelly on the odd occasion as we could take the floor against the wall, I guess it is still hard sand seaward of the fishermans steps although anything could have happened in the last few weeks.

Padstow would be on my agenda. Worth it for the Rick Stein Gish and Chips alone :)

There are 1 or 2 good pilot books for cruising in the region. Worth a look at Amazon.

Done the trip quite a few times. Leaving Falmouth, your best option, is either Newlyn or Penzants. Newlyn has pontoons and water at all tides. Penzants, you are behind a lock. From Newlyn. Go to Padstow. Protection in the river and a lock if wanted. Then Milford Haven. Check the weather both at Padstow and Milford Haven, it can be quite different.

Did Falmouth to Padstow and anchored off Rock, in one tide. engines set for running at 7.5kn. Also cant dry as have stabilizers. along with a 2mtr draft as well tides are very fav for the way out, not on the way back though. Dont know about the eateries as the menue seemed to frequently contain crushed nuts. (mine) & price would buy many litres of go go juice!

Cheers guys. Loads to work on
Reason for Milford haven was to minimise distance across Irish Sea
From scilly isles 135 m in one hop prob too far as we are only a crew of 2
Part of the object is also to visit places as we are allowing 3 weeks from hamble to cork stay for a week or so then 2 weeks back. No fixed timetable
Looking at pads tow as prob best stop over in answer to original question
Scilly now looks to be on the agenda to
