Hi, I’m thinking of doing round Britain next year but I have a 1.8m fin keel, which I know isn’t ideal. Has anyone done this in a similar boat and have a list of suitable stopping off points? Thanks

I did Plymouth to Peterhead and returned by the same coast last summer in a 1.7 m fin keel with no problem. My ports of call were: Ramsgate, Lowestoft, Scarborough, Hartlepool (waited for enough water to enter the gated marina), Eyemouth, Arbroath (limited access to the gated marina) Stonehaven, Peterhead, Blyth, Dover and Brighton.

Planning to do the west coast in 2023.

The majority of boats that go round are fin keel and the only thing you lose is the odd place where it might be nice to to dry out or go up a shallow river. However such places are rare and most of your stopping points will be deep water or maybe as Sandy suggests accessed via locks. there is masses of information about going round - it is almost a milk run now. Magazine articles, blogs, books and a starting point might be going to Scuttlebutt and reading Concertos ongoing thread - he is halfway round in a fin keel Fulmar.

I did it with 1.8m. Only problematic area was around the Wash. I had a crew for a few days and he didn't want to do the stretch from Harwich north in the dark (maybe he didn't trust me). We went into Wells on Sea to keep him happy which was a bit of a nightmare.

Granton mud will take 1.8m easily.

I am currently sailing round Britain in my Westerly Fulmar which draws 1.6m. The trip started in Chatham and I went up the East Coast and rounded the top of Shetland and I am just about to leave Scotland for Northern Ireland. This link is for my first post and you will then find links to the next thread onward. I have posted the good, the bad and the ugly. There are photos of harbours and places I have visited to make it interesting, some are from my drone for a different view. In my signature you will find a link to the first YouTube video. Currently only the first 2 parts have been fully editted up to Eyemouth, but in time it will cover the complete trip.
