me - hornchurch , boat - river crouch.

to chug from BYH to suttons yard up the roach , obviously going against the tide untill the roach , hoping to move boat round there monday 4th oct,

going by easytide and a guestimate HW will around 9am ish so me thinks its a early start :eek:

Kat B is arriving at Suttons next Thusday by road. Unfortunately I'm going to France next weekend so it'll be a couple of weeks until I get down there to take stock. I'll come and say hello if you are around. Think I'll be spending a lot of time there this winter...Maybe we should form a workers collective or something...

I always get confused between Sutton's Yard and Sutton's Wharf. I always haul out at Sutton's Wharf. Both of them are about the same distance up the Roach. From the Brankletts Buoy it's a bit over six miles, maybe closer to seven. I'd give myself 2 hours even with the tide assist, from the Brankletts Buoy but I only have a very small engine which can't push against a southwesterly coming down the reaches. After the Violet [or The Varlett] it is perfectly possible to tack but you have to know where the mud is.
 
No, you can be called Flipper,Full Circle, Glayva, Squidge and a few more that don't come right to the lips now

well according to the buisiness card i was given the place is called "Sutton Wharf" and is in Rochford :)


so where is Suttons yard ??

not that i'm bothered really as long as me boat comes out the water ok and is safe over winter thats all i'm concerned with :D:D

Sutton Wharf is Carter and Ward (Graham Carter) and is Rochford.

thank the lord for google earth :D

i would of gone to wrong place by boat :eek::eek: easy now straight up the roach and no sneeking round islands etc

just a pity its not made clearer in pilot book :rolleyes:

i never been past paglesham so be sumat new at least

As Jim of 'Full Circle' stated Sutton's Yard is at Great Wakering. Sutton's Wharf is Rochford and where you are apparently headed.

The hard part about getting to Sutton's Wharf is getting there with the high tide and understanding the withies on the way in. After the red and green buoy leave all the green topped withies 12 feet to starboard and completely ignore the red withies. [There is much argument in Sutton's Wharf each winter about whether you leave the green withies 12 or 15 feet to starboard or port depending which way you are going].

As you turn right to go towards the ramp watch the green buoy and keep well to port of it. And keep in close to the moored boats just before the ramp. Tie up to the wall and wait until the travel lift is in position. There is slightly more water on the ramp than there is in the river by about a foot. They will need to know exactly what you draw so that they know whether to put the extension between the tractor and the travel lift.

There have been minor problems with stuff being stolen from boats at Sutton's Wharf, but it is now much more secure that the gate is constantly locked. But a few odd people still wander around the boat yard. Get to know Nigel who is there 6 days a week and Grec and his dogs who are the on site security. I've had a problem with wind, particularly the southwesterly coming over Southend Airport and had a mast blown of its barrels breaking a tricolour but apart from that and the odd bit of ripped canvas I don't think the wind has caused too many problems at Sutton's Wharf.

The people who stand around and drink tea all weekend are the Roach Sailing Association [RSA] who will try very hard to distract you from any work that you want to do on your boat. You might consider joining the RSA at about £8 per annum as our bosun, has organised several discounts in terms of storage at Sutton's Wharf as well as taking down masts and putting them up. There are also several very knowledgeable people in terms of boat maintenance who might be able to give you useful advice but of course they will give that free of charge whether you are a member of the RSA or not.

Thanks John, a good resume of life in Rochford. It is excellent advice to join the RSA. Go to the Yahoo Group called Roach and apply. Remember tro take all the bends in the river wide, and keep an eye on the depth so you stay in the channel. There are 2 streams going in, but it is fairly obvious.

Update for Nigelm

Went up and scrubbed off on Saturday to get rid of about 300 trumpet barnacles I had gathered in the Gulf Stream and their have been a few minor changes on the way in. I went in at nautical twilight and came out at sunset - ran aground three times on the way in as I couldn't see the witthies, but I had left myself plenty of time and a few fishing boats coming out gave me some clues. I draw 1.5 metres and Saturday was neaps, so I expected it to be tight - I probably had an inch clearance getting onto the ramp to lean against the wall.

There are now three sets of buoys about a mile short of Sutton's Wharf and an extra cable crossing set. None of them really matter as I missed them all in the dark although I did have a very good idea where they were and in each case I was only 10-15 feet southeast of them.
The green buoy I mentioned where you turn right to go to the ramp has been replaced by a lovely green withy that is approximately the right place [i.e. leave it 12 feet to starboard]. Get right in close to the stern of the boats that you go past before the ramp - I didn't get close enough and had to power through the mud a bit.

Ignore the white withies - the one as you turn leave well to port and the other one after you have turned leave well to starboard. I believe they are both there to confuse us.
 
well pleased to report that "micaralee" is all tucked up in suttons now , we had a bumpy ride round from tollesbury to burnham on sunday , not sure on exact wind strength but "a lot" will do , made it thru the ray by the skin of our teeth! Was down to 0.2 mtrs at one point , came out bang on the yellow bouy then a easy ride from there to byh . left there at 7:00 this morning and arrvd suttons at 9:05 , nigel at the yard had the hoist waiting so it was straight out with no probs , we're jus behind "kat b" so will be saying hi to her owners soon . a apology to tiller girl regarding the soundings but we were bouncing around so much that taking notes got forgotten about , nx time maybe .
looking foward now to getting on with the internal jobs on boat and meeting up with all the forumites who have given me hints n tips for getting there.

Kat B is also safely chocked up at Suttons too. Bit touch and go with the trailer as she was showing 3.2 tons when we lifted her on Thursday morning as opposed to the 2.5 ish expected. Much umming and arrhing by trailer bloke about getting nicked but she got there no problem. People appeared from nowhere tro help with chocking her up. Turned out they were the good folks from the Roach SA.
Will be down this weekend to have a good clear out and start the jobs list...
