Hi,

Has anyone got an exploded diagram of a rotostay IV? I have had a google and can find most, if not all of the other models, but no IV. I'm specifically looking for the exploded drum diagram including the terminal end connection. Also any information on separating the foil sections, they appear to be glued.

Cheers

Yeah, got the one for the E. Drum looks to be totally different. I suspect the sections on the IV are also glued with loctite, it is the separation of them I was wondering about. I think maybe a hot air gun on the joints may soften the glue enough to pull them apart, unless anyone knows better.

I did exploded drawings for the Rotostay fs4 as it was the model commonly fitted on the Corribee. I'm not sure if it is exactly the same as the gear you're referring to, but it may be useful as it has photos and drawings of all the components.
Go to http://corribee.org/technical/roller-reefing/

My foil sections were joined with stainless sleeves, pop-rivetted in place and fortunately not too badly corroded, so they came apart reasonably easily. The difficult bit was splitting the drum, and especially removing the three stainless machine screws (which needed machine shop facilities). You might also need access to a lathe if you need to replace any of the bushes.

I downloaded that one. It is an fs that I have on the boat at the moment, but I have just obtained an unused IV without the foils or instructions and hope to swap the drum, keep the foils and replace the stay while i'm in there. I can't get the drum separated from the foil, I know its a left hand thread, but it is solid, have used the usual heat, yeild penetrating oil, stilsons, nylon mallets and masses of swearing, still stuck together. It differs from the one you know, the foils are attached to the drum by a left handed screw cap, no bolts.

Yeah, looked at that one, just need to see if the bottom swage screws directly into the centre of the machined stainless steel part. My fs was one of the later ones and looks like a fs/E hybrid. Rotostay seemed to change the spec on a regular basis without changing the model number. Even that IV you have posted the link for is a different design from the IV I have.

The E was entirely different to the IV, I've had both, the former could only furl one way, whilst the IV could be used in either direction. However I can't help with a drawing.

Thats interesting to know that the IV can furl in both directions. I passed up on a very good genoa last year because the UV strip was on the wrong side.

I have just come across your post and imagine by now you will have either got the foil off the drum or sent it to the scrap! Hope you have managed to get the drum apart..if you have can you provide any advice on dismantle and refitting the assembly? I have a pdf copy of the drawing but the file is too large for the post so I can't upload it. The information is no doubt no longer required but yes the foils are joined together using locktight so will be extreemely difficult to get apart.

I fitted a ROTOSTAY IV to my boat in 2002 it has given good service but recently the drum assembly seems to be trying to dismantle itself. The drawing shows the assembly held together with a cone shaped screwed fitting without a locknut! The assembly seems to be held together by relying on a tight fitting insert in the cone. I've not yet looked inside so not sure how the cone is screwed onto the thrust bearing. Any help or advice would be welcome.

HI All -appreciate this is an old post - but my Rotostay IV went stiff locked up in a F4 at sunset, leaving me like Kate Winslet on the bow struggling to stow the genoa !

Undoing the foil drum connector was easy - found lots of light grey gunge in the top of the drum and up the foil: cleaned out - undid the rope cage by drifting a SS spring pin out and whilst the drum was lowered still couldn't see how to get at the bearing - all the other pics on the internet show different versions of the RS Mark 4 - mine is a 414 type. Disappointingly the two contacts above haven't responded to several emails with pics etc - clearly not interested - like most chandleries or boat work yards unless theres mega bucks involved.
Three questions if anyone can help
- should the Drum / bearing be greased ?
-anyone any ideas how to get t the bearing out - for this model?
- anyone got any names of bearing mfgs who might be able to provide a new one to spec
I have the original installation paperwork and diagram but theres no advice

I know that this is way too late, but for the benefit of others who may now be looking for this diagram ...

Also attached are a PDF od the fitting instructions.
