We are a group of guys who want to have a crack at Fastnet 2005 for fun. There are some pre qualification requirements that we plan to deal with but are there any areas of RORC & IRC that we should pay particular attention to?
We are not complete dummies when it comes to sailing so it's more the technicalities I am interested in.
Cheers
Brian

PS Noticed Chris Enstone will be at the RTIR in June , so will we. Do they take team entries? If so is anyone interested in Team Scuttlebutt? Just a thought.

Having done the qualifiers for last year - I recall there are a minimum number of people (2+) who are required to have a 1st aid certificate. And at least 50% of the crew have to have Sea Survival.

Apart from the crew doing the qualifying miles on the boat which will be entered, and the first aid/sea survival ratio, do just make sure that you will attain the minimum STIX (or RORC STIX) figure. I suspect that in 05 a suitable SSSN from the IRC will be OK - but not for races after that.

On top of all that you will need all the ORC cat 2 (if I recall) kit that is specified - most of which is likely to be on a well found boat anyway. I was hoping to to do the Fastnet on my new boat - but I'm going to need an earnest discussion of SSSN/ STIX figures, as we dont at present, meet the requirement. As a number of the class have done Transpacs and newport Bermudas it seems a shame to be excluded.

We will, I hope, be doing the RTTI - providing I can find the right crew numbers who can keep the kite out of the sea when dropping it. As we will be fresh off the boat from San Diego, the chances of all the kit working as advertised is perhaps a bit slim - and Diverse Yachts will need to get their skates on if we are to have any functioning electronics - but if it can be done we will be there....

Practice, Practice and Practice! To learn the technical aspects of yacht racing you need to get out there and do it. If you are chartering then get down to almost ANY YC before Sat/Sun/Wed racing and you will usually able to find a ride if you know your way around a boat.

If you and your friends have a boat then get out on the water and race around the cans - this will show you the technicalities, then do the same thing offshore and see the differance.

The RORC have a çrew'list for each race so skippers cn find crew you could try that.

If you are looking to 'beat' the rule then talk to your sailmaker/rigger and designer with a large open wallet to get the boat tweaked - but remember IRC is a 'secret'rule and they can and do change the formula.

This year there seems to be some change around 'rudder configurations' and Roller reffing allowances. They are asking new questions like 'Do you have a rudder or steering device in front of the kee'?'

Most RORC races are won with good team work, sail 7 boat handling and excelent navigation.

Good luck and see you out there - Look out for CLARIONET GBR 195 and come over and say hello.
