Motala is having some new props fitted this week, so we pulled her out of the water this morning. Now, while on a course last week the instructor said that the port engine stalled a couple of times, but then seemed OK. Here is the reason why!

Just goes to show what rope can do when it wraps around tight! The cutters did their job, but will need replacing.

The offending rope - it was new which is why it caused the damage I think.

As an aside, Motala is anti fouled with Seajet Shogun and it never disappoints in the Hamble, it was slimy but no sign of barnacles or any other growth on the hull at all. we are putting on test the ultrasonic anti foul devise. See how it performs over the year.

The score was by the rope cutter being wrenched of the P bracket by the rope - it was 16mm rope and well tangled, we think that the rope was on the prop when the boat was berthed - from the tide, hence the prop was from a standing start, - kind of makes you worry what would happen if we had been going fast!! Have decided to remove the cutters and see what happens to the performance and economy.

Just my 0.02 worth, but I agree with hurric that those cutters aren't great. They're strippers I think. I had them on the last boat for a couple of years but the shearing faces wore, then they clanked, and there were plastic shims to replace (PITA). Perhaps they did cut some debris now and again but in the process they made a nuisance of themselves. For the last 2 years of owning the boat I didn't use them - they were removed. On the new boat I have no rope cutters.

On the old boat I was able to compare economy and max rpm/speed with and without the cutters, they day I removed them (diving). It made no measurable difference, nothing like the 3 knots you sometimes hear quoted, 0.3 knots would be closer
