How do I join my 3 strand anchor rode to the chain without using a shackle? The reason I ask is that the bow roller on my boat is small and the shackel does not pass through because it and the hard eye twist and get stuck.

Further to the above answer to "splice it" one might find a little more helpful or even <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.bluemoment.com/warpchainsplice.html> this link

If it is not already too late, you will find octoplait very much easier to splice to the chain, and it is much better as an anchor cable, cause it is sooooooo much easier to handle.

the first is considerably weaker according to the expert comentary on here around 6 months ago when the subject was aired, specifically due to the short diameter of the loop the rope strands are put through around the link.
In the latter these are avoided.
The latter should also go through the windlass as well, if not better.
I am of course still smarting from the earlier (justified) rubuke - however the search function on the toolbar above will get you a lot of long thread on this subject (and of course others) and is well worth playing with - generally go for the specific phrase and around 6 months for your search criteria then pick one post from a likely thread and read the whole thing in flat mode to 'get the picture'

good luck

First one is neater but more likely to wear and tear while the second is not so pretty but less prone to wear and tear. There is a third one which is just to splice a loop through the last link in the chain - very tight bend, but not so tight grip on the chain link hence lots of wear.

Personal choice which to use for splicing 3 strand hence I gave two options.

Personally I would go for octoplait rather than 3 strand anyway but the question was relating to 3 strand.

And there's a foruth, as per the Brion Toss Riggers Apprentice .... a long splice on that link, rather than the short splice shown on the NEROPEs sight.

Toss dislikes the weaving splice, saying it brings up lots of mud ..... I've seen ti done by seperating the three strands to make four bundles, and then weave in-out several times. Brion Toss does make the point that the splice is completely dependant on how well you tie off the bundles at the top .....
