Rope diameters

If you had subscribed to YM back in the '70s or so you would have received for free a little plastic gadget/gauge which would have allowed you to make the measurement.


I still have mine! Great little bit of kit, I've found it really handy. Though I think they labelled one of the measurements (screw sizes?) wrongly. (And if there's a windspeed converter on the back (I may be confusing it with another gadget now, and I can't check because it's on the boat) it doesn't quite tally with the official Beaufort scale!)

Most lines have at least some part which is uncompressed and usable for measuring.

Old rope will quite likely be slightly compressed, but what I find confusing is that it (especially sheets) sometimes appears to measure larger than the spec size because the cover is abraded and the surface fibres are (if you excuse the technical term) fluffed up.
