Rope cutter - good idea or not?

We're launching soon, after the winter layup and I'm wondering whether to install a rope cutter on the propshaft. I mentioned it to our local charter company and he said "rubbish! we took all ours off"

It seems like a good idea but are they more trouble than they are worth?

Pros and cons?

Also, is there a type that can be fitted without removing the prop? I know that will be a full blown nightmare.

Thanks.
I'd say, not more trouble than they're worth, but I've seen many boats have the drive train seriously damaged from rope around the prop, in a fishing boat with large reduction there is enough power to pull the gearbox off the engine.

There are three types
Disc
Scissor
Shaver

I may be biased as we supply the saver type but you probably guessed that.
The RNLI removed scissor cutters and the latest US Navy vessels use the shaver as well as many new boat builders. They are supplied to many commercial vessels and have proved their effectiveness over many years now. Effective with minimal maintenence.
Used by Fleming, Baltic work boats, Teignbridge props, CJR, Eliche, Clements, Grandbanks, Sunreef
