Got 29 metres of chain and much more of 3 strand rope so cut off shackle and eye and spliced rope into chain links .Splice looks ok However still apprehensive about joint . Could also be subject to fraying when coming up over gipsy. Did it since I have manual windlass being of a certain age and to help out SWIMBO in times of stress but worried about frayed nerves keeping me awake at night wondering if joint has parted and drag alarm not heard due to drunken stupour

Any comments to give me more confidence afer laying

I believe the splice on octoplait works a lot better, it looks neater, stronger, and is easier over a gypsy. Plus octoplait is MUCH easier to handle as an anchor cable.

I'll second that octoplait is dead easy to splice into chain, once your used to it takes about ten minutes and like talbot sez octoplait is great, it don't stiffen with salt flakes great into a locker and is easily as stretchy as three strand.........keith

if you opt for octoplait, check with the windlass manufacturer first. lofrans say their combination gypsy is designed only for 3-strand, it needs a hard rope to get a proper grip.

Re: Rope cahin splice on Anchor cable re catmandoo

I did 3 strand nylon to chain splice a few years ago and it still seems ok at present. I followed the instruction from the link :-
http://home.cogeco.ca/~mquill/chain_rope_splice.html
As the rope was oversize the splice was spread over 2 links. I also added some shrink sleeve to the rope where it passed through the links to give extra protection. Once the splice was finished I covered most of it with tape. Tape is possibly no good for a windlass but when I fit one I will worry then.

I have a SL anchorman windlass and it does not accept octoplait. I have to use 3 stranded nylon. The splice is a back splice tapering the strands as you work back. This allows the splice to go around the gypsy without any problems.
In response to the original thread. The anchoring gear needs constant inspection and as long as the splice is inspected regularly there should be no problem as you should be re-splicing priodically depending on the amount of use.

Regards.

Peter.
