Note from EA just now.

"There will be a temporary closure of Romney Lock on Monday 27 April between 9am and 11am. Due to an unforeseen operating problem with the recently installed gates, it is necessary to carry out a dive inspection in order to fully understand the problem. We apologise for the short notice which accompanies a problem of this nature and for any inconvenience it may cause.

Details of this temporary closure have been placed on our website and this information is being passed on at the adjacent locks.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your weekend."

I must say the email updates are very excellant.

I was stuck in Windsor by the park earlier this year for a week because I set off not knowing the lock was still closed.

Doesn't everyone use mobile. This forum doesn't work on mobile.

This forum works fine on mobile (iPhone) and Tablet (iPad).

With my TMBA hat on, I have been pressing the EA to improve communications with river users for a long time and they seem to be finally responding. The email notifications regarding unscheduled work at Romney yesterday is the first time that they have communicated exactly as I have been calling for and it is also the first time that there has been prompt notification that the work was completed and the lock back in service. Well Done !!!

However, this was during a normal working weekday. Contrast this with the complete lack of any form of communication regarding the problems at Penton Hook the previous weekend - a Saturday - and I am still intent on trying to secure a reliable process to ensure that river users can be informed in a timely manner of unexpected stoppages that might affect their planned journeys.

As for mobiles, as others have said this site works well on mobiles. However, it would be wrong to assume that everyone uses them. I suspect that there are many more boaters that have no email or web facilities when on the river than those that do.

How do you get the email notifications? I get the river conditions emails but have never had anything else:confused:
From the .gov.uk website:

Email riverthames@environment-agency.gov.uk with the word ‘subscribe’ in the subject line.
