There has been, and still is, no Self Service power at Romney Lock for 3 weeks.

Has anyone received any information to this effect by email or other information service? There is nothing on the Restrictions and Closures page on the EA website.

The only info seems to be a chalked notice at Boveney and Old Windsor to say its hand winding only at Romney outside attended hours, and notices on the lock pedestals at Romney itself.

Apparently there has been a breakdown in the related machinery and the supplier(?) has gone out of business necessitating the special manufacture of replacement parts.

Breakdown of equipment leading to restricted operations - regrettable.

Almost complete absence of information regarding this - dare I say not good enough ???

thanks

Thanks for the warning Tony as I was intending to pass through there out of hours this week being a lazy toad I will now plan to get there before hand lol.

Heading off today on the slowest trip ever from Temple to Windsor so big waves and time to stop for beer if any of you guys are on that stretch in the next 3 days :-)

Nick

Not only Romney,
but also Sandford, whose top gate is an absolute asterisk to wind. Apparently one of the lower gates is about to fall off, so has to be operated with extreme care.

Again no info from the EA, and no notices posted at nearby locks either.

Seems to me that once EA have got your license money, boaters can take a running jump.

Hours cut back,
No summer assistants at many locks, and now restricted to July and August only.

Not a problem to the seasoned boater, OOPS is easy if a bit tedious to operate (Culham; 20 minutes to fill).

BUT that's not a whole lot of good if the kit doesn't work!

With an IWA rally at Beale Park in August, how's about Thames Boaters making a protest to the EA - who will surely have a stand - and make our feelings known???

ps: OOPPS now back at Sandford, but slower as there's sticking plaster on the bottom gate as a temporary fix

I imagine some Thames Boaters (like myself) are going to avoid The Thames around Beale Park at the end of August. If the EA are going to invite the hoards of nb's (being a bit of a Gillian Duffy here) surely we should get some of the licence fee returned for the time when using our boats is going to be difficult/impossible.

I have one of those on the boat, given to me by my father when he gave up boating.

Cant say I will ever see a BRITISH WATERWAYS run waterway to use it though....

]Now there's a windlass key that's either seen no use at all or so much its buffed to a gloss:-)

Bit ashamed to show mine.....bit the worse for wear and probably responsible for most of the corners being badly worn on all the Meadway locks:(

Romney

Was down at Romney Tuesday in Tom Jones Boat yard right below the lock and after hours power was working, going through on Wednesday the Engineers I am told were in final test mode so should be ok now
