Role of asset depreciation in larger (60f) boats

The title of the thread already makes an erroneous assumption.
Private yachts are not assets. They are liabilities and serve no useful purpose in life.

Except pleasure.

Disagree they are assets and the question was not erroneous.
My boats asset value has increased in my tenure of ownership .A brand new one certainly would not have .
A friend of mine way back in 2008 had his Benetti 125 delivered and jokingly the factory said we have another exactly like yours a canceled order ( remember the crash of 2008 ? ) so he negotiated hard on the twin and took it .
Berthed both side by side Sold one and cleared £500 K after expenses almost immediately summer 2009 .

Assets values change all the time in both directions , not necessarily by definition upwards only .Take gold for example .

Every Ferrari I have had has been equally and carefully chosen as my boat have been sold for more than I paid for them .
They / you tell me cars deprecate .They can but not all .
Oh I do not give a 7oss what people think , more fool them it works out free motoring .
Actually they are well received esp in the Europe a lot of positively .Folks wind there windows down ( to hear them ) and film in the U.K. .

” useful purpose “
Apart from leisure , a part of which is accommodation - a place to sleep + eat etc air conditioned as well , in the CdA and indeed across to Genoa it’s actually faster and less stress travel by boat , well a fast boat .
Skimming along in a straight line at 28/30 knots in my boat you will get from Cannes / Antibes / Monaco to St Trop or even Boubas house faster than by car + French roads .

3 hrs to Calvi on Corsica .
Try that from Nice airport to Corsica with check in and taxis at both ends .= 6 hrs double the time .Granted the flight time is 30 mins .Buts its the rest of the hassle .

Except pleasure.

Is not the quest for pleasure the main driving of everything ? Otherwise we will all be content to live with the bare necessary - just enough to sleep in, something to eat etc. I mean the theory is there - stage 3, where the socialism becomes communism and the people as a whole are conscious of what is necessary and not, and act accordingly.

We did had a few experiment with this and they all turned sour. My theory is that the quest for pleasure is the main driving thing for everything we do, and we are constantly evaluating if the next pleasure-bringing action will cause such a harm (financial, emotional) that the total balance will be negative. If you remove the prospective pleasure from your action (going shopping, holiday trip, making a photo, buying boats, everything) then we could collapse as there will be no driver for let's say a farmer to work for someone else. Which was the problem the stage-3 countries had.

And don't let me started on the "useful purpose" of life itself .... chemical beings with the illusion of self-determination, that's what we all are at the end.

Even if it sound "elite" a boat even a small one is almost a necessity in Cote d' Azur and actually all the area from La Spezia to Toulon. The alternative is a miserable experience made out of car traffic, impossible parking, beaches crammed like the subways and dirty water. There are place which are basically boat-only (Plage du Briande for example, 10 Nm from St.trop boat or 1 hour trek under the sun), this is how it looks in the mid of summer - the beach is white sand btw, almost tropical. But there are dozen of other more or less known spots.

Im also not sure if taking 4 people with the ferry to Sardinia, add accomodation on the beachfront, plus renting a 6-mt outboard for 2 weeks would be much cheaper, beside the hassle of getting all of this organized and hoping for the best (last year friends of mine got "dumped" by their holiday rental company at the last moment and ended up with no holiday at all).

So all this togheter sums up of course in the calculation "it is worth" and may explain why people spend money in boats / expensive berths etc.

Our recent trip to St Tropez cost me over £1k just in fuel, not a cheap way to travel !
Don’t get me on with car depreciation..........made a few quid on some, a lot on a GT3 ....but after a McLaren, boating seems reasonable.

July , but still a bun fight .
How ever another good place to spend the night as the day trippers disappear and there are two fine restaurants just behind the pines to tender in to .

I expect my aston has cost me £60k in depreciation in 3 years and the boat around £400k in 5 years. Is what it is. Luckily I dont try to make money out of cars or boats (fun stuff)! With various investments elsewhere (boring stuff) I should earn enough to cover any boat/car losses & maintenance.

We are around the corner in Leoube. We walked to Estagnol the other day. Beautiful day today but a madhouse ! We are leaving at the crack of dawn despite the perfect weather because the weekends are even crazier ?

Actually linked to this thread on depreciation and if you like VFM , which is dep turned around , if you look carefully at the white boat in my post # 68 ^^^ the open Prado - see the three birds on board ?
They were Italian ladies of a certain age with a skipper. Think Monica Bellucci type .The boat came from Genoa , the skipper brought it and the ladies stayed in a hotel .Moved around a bit by boat and used the brand new Prado as there access to the sea .
Reason I know one of them told me she preferred an Itama , it s what just traded for that .
We got chatting while I was washing my boat next to hers …..then the wife turned up ( been shopping ) :D

If looks could kill :D

At the far end of bay Cavaliere is also nice anchorage with fab hotels for meals to tender in .Looking at this pic in the back ground^^

There is real fancy hotel , zillion star jobbie, just to the L out of shot with a dining area next to the beach .
So I booked a table for two , the Prado ladies were anchored behind us .
I swam in during the day to book .
7 pm we tender in , drag it up the beach , the maitre d said we were not allowed in the dining room .
Yes I had a shirt + shorts and wife was dolled up …..it was the shoes , we had no shoes ? + ? , just bare feet obviously.
This place was that posh bare feet were not permitted in the dining veranda.
Anyhow , with out fuss they set up a table on the beach for us .
Been looking Fwds to a bit of proper French nosh all day .Turned out ok in the end .

So do you buy a floating apartment 3 cabin 50ftr + or a open fast day / overnighted and hire a seasonal crew , and live the life of luxury , pampered .This hotel has a sister in Paris , as if this is the sea Front version .
The ladies stayed in a lodge on the beach a annex to the hotel , the crew guy in the cuddy on the Prado .

The Monica Bellucci woman ( before my wife interrupted) told me her husband sent her away with her friends , he was too busy with work back in Genoa .

Pretty boat too the Prado .:).

Makes you think !

Didn’t the restaurant offer to pick you up in their rib? I’m shocked ?

Did not have one , it was a hotel annex to something like the Ritz , not a Joe public turn up surf and turf / Berger place ( you wouldn’t have like the menu )
The open only for June , July , August , waiters dressed like penguins, dress code @ dinner .
I just happened to blag my way in earlier to book a table .If you don’t ask ……..

I am interested in your use of the word Earn

Speaking of blagging and misunderstandings we were coming back from the Calanques and the wind ( mistral got up ) so pulled in @ Bandol .I was in the Sunseeker with kids .Basically they had enough bouncing around even though we down wind .I was sick of the supercharger wine as well it was driving me mad :) KAD 300 s .

I did not fancy crossing the bay of Porquerolles as off Cavaliere it cuts up even more from previous experience.

Rather than ch 9 it I just pulled up at the fuel pontoon and sent the wife in to the capitanerie .
about 5 pm .
The guy came round , the white horses in the bay other side of the Paul Riccard island looked wicked and the sea was breaking over the mole .
The only space was between a couple of 24 M San Lorenzo boats and he put us there , sent a sparky to rewire the shore power down to 16 A . Only charged us for a 12 m btw .
Anyhow by the time I adjusted the passerelle up a bit to get off it was near 8 pm .

We we’re gonna eat ashore so we walked to the end of our jetty towards the town and there was a barrier , gazebo , BBQ tents , music a person putting wrist bands on etc .
“ Are you off the boat “ someone said .
“ Yes we are off a boat “ my wife or 10 y old blurted .
Before we knew it , we had wrist bands and were put in touch ( in the crowd ) to a eng speaking lady from Bandol tourist info office , then lead to the food , and drink glasses regularly topped up by staff .The other folks to me seemed like a mixed bag of tourist from all over the world .
The Mayors office had a delegation promoting the place .
Anyhow after pigging out we managed to find an exit and went exploring the old town .
Found a nice fishing tackle shop and got the kids some new gear as you do .
Found a ice cream shop etc .
10.30 pm wander back to the Marina and the infrastructure I mentioned was packing up .
We went to this gate to get through to get back on the jetty .

Immediately accosted by the nice translation lady who remembered us “ you have missed the boat “
“ what boat , that’s our boat there “ as I pointed at it in the distance .

Turns out a cruse ship pulled up after us and anchored in the bay and it was the first time Bandol had one and they were keen to put a good show on in order to attract it on its circuit .
We couldn’t see the ship as the two 24 M boats dwarfed us and blocked the view . When we got off ours we looked towards the town and missed it .
