Rogue wave height and frequency?

Just read the report.
If the enquiry's finding is indeed the cause, then surely there must have been an unquantified period "of flooding" - so why no distress call in that period?

I always understood it was catastrophic failure at frame 65 (?) so the ship broke in two and sank like a stone.
I am only going by accounts and have no specialist knowledge of these matters.

That was the working assumption for many years but was apparently disproved when they found the wreck. For some reason it appears the No1 hatch cover was breached and the ship would have gone down very quickly after that. The exact hows and whys of that are probably open to interpretation.

One thing I forgot to mention is when crossing the Atlantic we saw on the horizon much bigger waves than normal and they were frequent. We got one occasionally about 14 feet bur not really a problem as they weren't breaking.

I can believe that the wave trains are bent slightly by oil rigs, meaning that down-swell (did I just invent a word?) of the rigs, the swells are no longer running parallel, but that some of them are slightly crossing each other. That could cause an area with higher (or lower) swells then one might find up-swell of the rig.
Just a thought.

Don't know about that! However certain semi sub rigs have drilled off the Dogger Bank and in storms have experienced waves up to deck level. On one occasion a severe concussion was felt throughout the rig and subsequently it was discovered that a wave passing through had lifted the Blow out Preventer and is carried off the rail tracks and derailed it. A total weight of around 200 tons. There is a video on YouTube of a semi experiencing a similar wave which could be in excess of 20 metres filmed from a nearby ship or platform. This was before the wave passed the rig ;)

Another "myth" explained by this thread.

My daughter's friend has made a very successful career in catering, particularly at sea. She is now in her 40s and has returned ashore.
She told me that while working on a North Sea oil rig (I can't recall its name) she saw a rogue wave sweep under the rig's platform deck. She recounted that the wave top was only a few feet below the deck.

I found it literally incredible at the time, but after watching that youtube clip I have accepted she knew what she was talking about.

Scary INDEED.
