Roger is over and Wilco is out

Todays paper reports that the National Policing Improvement Agency is to give officers words or phrases that will create more consistency. 'Roger' is to be replaced with 'acknowledged' ( shades of Lt. Worf in Star Trek) and 'wilco' is to become 'will do'. I wonder if 'mayday' will become the 'bank holiday occuring on the first Monday in May'

That chap Roger was replaced by an Eyetye bloke called Romeo in April 1969.

As the Armed Forces will continue to use Roger and Wilco no doubt a quango will be set up to establish a new interdepartmental radio language for use when the Forces are called-out to act as Firemen or for flood relief or Foot-and-Mouth etc.

Some time ago when I did my VHF course there were just two students, myself and a Yorkshireman and the bloke doing the teaching. The tutor whilst running through the phoenetic alphabet and arriving at 'India' was interupted by the man from Yorkshire, "I think you'll find that's 'Indigo."
"Sorry?" said the Tutor, as if he hadn't heard.
"I said, I think you'll find its 'Indigo'," he re-iterated.
The Tutor looked at me askance, searching for inspiration.
Being a Lancastrian, I remembered the old family saying;
"You can always tell a Yorkshireman....but you can't tell him much"
Quite a quiet afternoon really.

Being an ex Sapper (1970's) I always smile when I hear the word 'repeat' over the radio.

The forces radio procedure uses the word 'repeat' to indictae to the gunners to fire again.

Just out of habit I never use that word, but use 'say again' instead.

I think we used 'Wilco' in the RE.

Means 'will comply'

I was on course once and one bloke kept coming up with 'Hotel' every time he got to the letter 'O', instead of 'Oscar'. Had us scratching our heads a bit until we realised he was actually saying 'Otel'. A clasic case of dropping ones 'H's!!
