For those who read my other posting on Spade anchors, I just had an email from the Rocna importers who had taken the next size up anchor, tried it in the anchor locker of my boat at SIBS and reported back that it fitted. So the one I'm considering well definitely fit.

Now I really have a tough decision - Rocna/Spade........ /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Does the potential SPOF with the Spade bolt still exist ? Do you NEED to take the anchor to pieces ?

If not, then Rocna.

Nice to have the choice of the two anchors side by side, as it were.

With no practical experience of either, I would buy the Rocna.... possibly on price, but also that is what my gut tells me.

The real test would be to have both and give them a personal workout in a weedy hard sand bottom, but life isnt like that.

I think the thing that has doen it for me is the guy who has a workboat in Northern Scotland, (also posts here, but cant remember his name - some people thought he was a "plant"). He said that with a CQR they had to drop the anchor several meters from where it they wanted it to end up, to give it chance to get a grip. With the Rocna, this technique left them several meters from where they wanted to be because it dug in immediately - in all kinds of bottom.

Cheers

Richard

I tried to get some info from the ROCNA website as to cost and shipping and if they had an outlet in the US. but no answer. Anyone have any insight or suggestion as to how to get the information. Thanks.

Service like that and confirmation of fit would tip the balance for me. Especially as I dont like the concept of the pull apart anchor very much when being used as the main anchor. Fair enough for the kedge.

I remember seeing a graph somewhere comparing both... can't remember which one came out on top though /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Good for the Rocna importer!
I take it that you are satisfied that the anchor you want can also be manoevred through your pulpit?

Isn't there a grave risk that if we all go for the latest flavour of the month in anchoring terms, we'll need bigger lockers to accommodate all these different versions. The trusty old CQR is currently out of favour, so expect piles of them on the stand at the boat jumbles. We kept ours as a spare bower alongside the Delta that replaced it, and the Fortress kedge. Certainly some of the newer types seem easier to set, but buying the latest high tech anchor will not guarantee that you won't drag if your anchoring technique is suspect.

Fortunately I have a split pulpit so that is not a problem.

I think I will go for the Rocna for several reasons:

- it's one piece
- it got a hole in the shank to secure the anchor if I do leave it on the bowsprit eg. for short trips between anchorages
- the roll bar makes a useful handle for when I'm man-handling it out of the locker.
- it will be the recommended size, so no worries from insurance perspective.

Will let you know when I report back my handover of Hawana....2/3 weeks away.

I quick look at your Bio and the Dehler kept at Hardway rang the memory bells. Nice to meet and as we said, we'll probably bump into each on the water.

BTW It just so happens I've got a small TV from the old boat and since Hawana is open plan that means I'll also have a TV in every cabin. Does that sway it back again?

Tested my Rocna 10 this weekend. Set almost immediately at 3/1 scope and hold my B30 without any sign of drag on 15-20 kts wind veering the boat for around 120 degrees.
Very satisfied with its erfomance, especially considering that my old CQR did not set there even after 5-6 tryes.
