Alongside getting more important issues on the boat fixed, I'm working on a refurb of the rocker switch actuators. Each dashboard switch is made up of two components, a switch body (the actual switch) and a switch actuator (the cover). The bodies come in many types, on/off, momentary on, on / off / on, etc. The actuators are either solid or have one or two red lines for illumination purposes.

In common with all Fairlines of that era (late 90's to mid 00's I think) the boat has Carling V Series Contura III switches. The Contura II's having bobbles and the III's having lines. I believe the legends for these switches were screen printed and you won't see a boat with the original switches where the legends haven't faded. My boat is better than most having had them all replaced at some point in the past (the originals were in a bag in a locker). But as you'll see, some legends have completely faded again.

After extensive searching I've not been able to find anyone who can supply a complete replacement set. Most of the legends are available for download on the Carling website but it appears that Fairline had some custom legends made, the artwork for which is lost.

One refurb solution in to replace the switches with the more readily available Contura IV, V & VII. These are a different shape (more rounded) but will still fit the original bodies and dashboard panels. They are also more easily customizable having laser etched legends. You can buy them online from the states see https://rockerswitchpros.com/ and they cost $10-12. I've seen some Targa's where this replacement has been done, usually they've only done half the job and left some of the originals in place (yuk).

Being a fussy sod, I want the replicate the original actuators so have looked around for suppliers that can custom paint blanks. I found a company in the UK who said they may be able to 'digital print' actuators (screen printing being uneconomic for such small volumes) however the paint wouldn't stick. After a long wait they sent me an engraved switch with a white paint fill. These are too crude for me and I have now found a company in China that I'm hoping will supply and screen print low volumes of actuators. Stickers are another option however I think these will peel in the sun.

I'm currently creating the vector artwork for the the switches based on the Carling legends plus designs from scratch based on the faded switches that I have. I#ll share these later.

If anyone else is interested in a new set of switches please let me know. What would be VERY helpful is photos of Fairline switch banks as I suspect there are switches out there that aren't on a T34 (e.g. for A/C, holding tanks, gensets, U/W lights, pasarelles, etc).

Engraving doesn't work unless you paint fill the engraving. In some cases that might look OK but I'm concerned that it will gather crud and also won't work well for legends such as the fan where there's quite a lot of white.

I enjoy the design and sourcing aspects of these projects and am not terribly interested in learning to screen print. And others who do this all the time will do a better job than me.

I would go with the laser etched actuators. You can have any design you like, with any combination of icons and text and it all illuminates with the backlighting. I've had these done for previous boats and am just in the process of getting the switches for my current boat ordered. I would post some sample pictures but Photo Bucket recently axed 3rd party hosting...

You don't need to order from the US either - I have used Applied Marine Automation in Plymouth and always found them to be very helpful.

Thanks, I'd not come across Applied Marine but they also seem to do Pad Printing so should be able to print on my Series 3 actuators. Will also take another look at etching.

Applied Marine weren't able to help (too busy and are avoiding 'pad printing'). I've got a few more irons in the fire, failing that will have to live with the existing faded switches or go for later laser etched ones.

Anyone got a photo of the switches that they use for later / current Targas?

I went into boaty electrical shop in Antibes who stocked replacement covers .
The cover just unclips .
They had all the symbols .
That was when I had a Sunseeker - same switch’s on the dash .

I could have got the originals off the shelf a few years ago. Sadly with the passing of time they have become very hard to source, particularly the custom ones. If you do see any in the SofF, let me know!

As they say, nice problems to have....

Not sure if these are what you want but I bought from here a couple of years ago and they had all I wanted in stock but also told me they could print or engrave almost anything I required if not on the shelf.
I seriously considered the newer tops as they were engraved and would likely last longer but went for the same as I already had.

You beat me to to!
+1 for Brian Wards in Brundall. Replaced switch tops on a couple of our boats including Fairline Targa 35. They keep a variety of switch tops in stock so I wouldn’t have thought it would be a problem getting what you need Pete.

Good spot! I had high hopes but all of theirs are portrait mounted switches but the majority of the switches on the T28/29/30/34 are landscape mounted. I have got 4 or so that are portrait so that might be a supply for those

But I will give Brian a call to see if he can get the ones that I need made.

Just buy them for Axon. They cost peanuts and Axon will make whatever you want. Eg the ones below are all custom etched per my request - ok these are the more modern Contura5 actuators but you can order contura 3 if you want to keep the retro /original look. The ones below are red LED backlit so the letters glow - I would upgrade to that because it is so easy to do - but obviously not if you want to keep the original look

Spoke to Brian Wards and they do their own printing so can match the originals. Yippee :)!

There is a MOQ so I really need three or others to come in with me. So if anyone else is reading this and has faded switches on their T28/29/30/34 and wants to replace them please let me know! The more people join in, the cheaper it will be. Hopefully we can get the price of a complete set down to under £100.

I'll also talk to Fairline / Bates and see if they can chip in.
