If anyone would like to experience a one-hour masterclass in rock-dodging, I would recommend a trip on the car-ferry Loch Portain across the Sound of Harris between Berneray and Leverburgh (or vice-versa). Alternatively you could just look at Chart BA2802 where the route is helpfully depicted by a dotted line. I can confirm that, on last Thursday at least, the vessel's track did not deviate from that line by more than about 10 metres.

The inter-island ferries in the Channel Islands are interesting too, and with double-figure tides they having plenty to think about. I have spent many happy hours watching them on AIS as well as the odd trip on them.
