Robert Clark\'s 1937 Ortac

Dear all,

Please excuse me if this is not the correct forum for posting this question.

A friend of mine, who is not comfortable using the Internet, is trying to find out when and where the following article was published:

"8. Long Distance Racing 1937". I have placed GIFs of the 5 pages here:

http://www.palao.com/ortac/

Although I believe the article mentions several boats, he is particularly interested in the Ortac. He thinks this was published in the late thirties but he only has photocopies of it. The copies seem to show no sign of the original publication. My friend ignores whether this was published as part of a book or a magazine. The number 8 before the title suggests a chapter or section number, so it might correspond to the annuary of a yachting association or club. My Internet research has proved unsuccessful so far.

Any clues are very much appreciated. Also any recommendations about a newsgroup or elsewhere where I could ask.

Thank you in advance,
Jose Palao

Re: Robert Clark\'s 1937 Ortac

Ortac was built in 1937 so almost certainly featured in The Yachtsman's Annual 1937-38. This publication is also known as the Yachting World Annual and was published by Robert Ross & Co. Ltd. (I have the 1950-51 Annual as that covers my own boat, Joliette, also a Robert Clark).

Incidentally, wasn't Ortac the first yacht to be fitted with a pulpit? I believe she was. A great innovation of Clark's, at the time.

You may be able to find further information by contacting the British Classic Yacht Club through www.britishclassicyachtclub.org.

It\'s a book

It's from one of the Uffa Fox "annuals" - five beautiful books on sailing, design and construction, published one a year in the 1930's.

These are, in sequence, (I think!)

Sailing, Seamanship and Yacht Construction
Second Book
Sail and Power
Thoughts on Yachts and Yachting
Racing Cruising and Design

So, we are looking for the 1938 book which I think is the last one.

I have them all at home,so will check tonight.

Re: It\'s a book

Wow, Thank you very much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I really was not expecting a response so fast and concise.

Very best regards,

Re: It\'s a book

Sailing , Seamanship and Yacht Construction was republished in 2002.

There was a "Best of Uffa" published a few years ago that is still in some bookshops

Re: It\'s a book

Dear Jose,

Just to confirm that the extract is pages 39 to 45 of "Racing, Cruising and Design", written by Uffa Fox and published by Peter Davies in London in 1937. The book was reprinted several times and my copy is the 1951 reprint.

These are some of the best sailing books ever written; beautifully produced. Today we have colour photographs but there is no equivalent of Uffa Fox, a talented designer and sailor, to re-draw all the plans for publication and to comment knowledgeably about the sailing.

All the best

Re: It\'s a book

Dear Andrew,

You are very kind.

It looks like the book was also reprinted in 1985 by Ashford, Buchan & Enright.

My friend is more than happy with the information.

Thank you very much.

Best,
Jose Palao
