In the ionian in 33 degrees in june, my eldest daughter starts school next year, and the prospect of 40 degrees in july and august means we are contemplating moving our boat to the uk. This also saves our annual ryanair bill. We are 8 tonnes, 39 feet and too deep for the canals, so considering bringing her back overland from a suitable port in the med to any northern french port.

I have thought about sailing her round biscay but don't have the annual leave or the flexibility to catch a weather window.

Anyone got any experience/recommendations of costs, logistics, best med location for the haulout?

I could spend next year getting her to genoa, nice, marseille or possibly st louis?

Advice gratefully received...

Or, anywhere else in the med which is flight-accessible, cooler and not overcrowded in july and august? (Unlikely i know hence first question...)

Thanks.

Yes, did exactly that 3 years ago. The three sensible choices are up the Adriatic to Slovenia and then truck to channel port (or across to UK. Many people use this route as it is the main route for N European boats going to Greece and Croatia. My Bavaria was delivered from the factory that way (eventually to Corfu). So, possible to get return loads. Second through south of France, usually Marseilles as again lots of traffic from the boat factories in western France delivering new boats, so La Rochelle or Channel port using a French company. Third to Spain - which was the route I chose, although not deliberate, just boat problems and running out of time. I got a good price from San Carles to Poole as again there is a lot of traffic on that route. Avoid Italy as it is a nightmare dealing with permits.

Cost of transport is likely to be between £5-6k depending on whether you can organise to get a return load. Mine was £4.5k in 2010 and most quotes were nearer £6k. Plus handling at each end - San Carles is both cheap and good for this bit. Add the cost of getting from the Ionian to the port which could be another £2k for a delivery, but obviously less if you have the time and inclination to do it yourself.

PM me if you want any more information.

Thanks for the advice. I'm looking into slovenia to amsterdam. Prices are in line with some of the estimates i've had :(.

I can get the boat to slovenia with some mates in a week or two so that's my new plan A.

Thanks again.

An alternative is to sail to somewhere like Sete and then truck the boat to say La Rochelle. As there are boat deliveries from that area to the Med, you can sometimes get a cheaper return trip for the lorry. That was how I brought mine back, although, in my case it was Toulon to Brittany.

If you contact the transport companies you check their schedules.
